Best Bread for Tuna Melts
For making this melt sandwiches I like to use a sough dough bread. However you can also use whole wheat bread, white bread, whole wheat bread, tortillas, hamburger buns, pumpernickel bread, rye bread, a bagel or english muffins. Change things up and figure out which one you like the best with yours.
Tips for Making this Recipe
Always use lots of cheese. You want it to be melty and cheesy and it is important that you us two slices of cheese on both sides of the sandwich.
Butter the bread. You want that crispy on the outside from toasting the sandwich in the pan so you will want to use room temperature butter on the bread. If you don’t like using butter you can use mayo on the outside of the bread.
Use Canned Tuna with water and drain well. I find that the canned tuna in water is better than the canned tuna in oil. It is also important to make sure you drain the can of tuna well.
Tuna Melt Sandwich Recipe Variations
So the basics of a tuna melt sandwich recipe are the same for every tuna melt sandwich but you can change things up easily and get creative and even more flavorful. Not just the bread but the toppings and make it as fancy or basic as you want to. The tuna melt sandwich is the perfect recipe to keep as a classic or fancy up with your favorite flavors.
Change up the cheese. I like provolone but you can use cheddar cheese, American cheese, Munster cheese, Swiss cheese, pepper jack and Asiago are great cheeses to use when you are making a tuna melt.
Add Veggies. Slices of lettuce and tomato are great additions too this tasty skillet sandwich. Avocado is a great veggie to add too.
Add bacon. Everything is better with bacon, so add a few slices of crispy bacon on top of the tuna sandwich while it is cooking.
Add pickles. Slices of pickles are always a great addition to a tuna melt sandwich!
Add some spice. If you are a fan of jalapeno peppers then you can add some spice by adding a few slices of jalapeno peppers.
Make it low carb. Use a low carb tortilla or low carb bread. You can also melt the cheese on top of the tuna mixture and add it to a leaf of lettuce and make it a low carb tuna melt lettuce wrap. If doing this I suggest skipping putting the tuna on the skillet and putting a scoop of the tuna mixture on a plate, then top it with the cheese of your choice and heating it in the microwave for 30-40 seconds to heat the tuna sandwich mixture and melt the cheese.

How to Make Tuna Melt Sandwich
Mix the Tuna Fish mixture. In a medium bowl mix together the tuna, mayonnaise, celery, onions, lemon juice, salt, and pepper.
Prepare the bread. Spread the butter on one side of each slice of bread.
Layer the sandwich. Place four slices of bread in a pan over medium heat on the stove butter side down. Place two slices of cheese on each slice of bread. Top the cheese with the tuna mixture. Place the bread on the top of the tuna butter side out.
Cook the Sandwich. You can cook the sandwich in a pan on the stove or using the broiler of your oven.
On the stove in a pan. Cook for 2-3 per side or until the bread is golden brown. Then flip the sandwiches and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes.
Broiler. If you would prefer to bake the sandwich under the broiler you can do that too. Just preheat the broiler, place the bread butter side up on a baking sheet and toast for a few minutes. Top the bread with the cheese, tuna mixture and top with the second piece of bread and then cook under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is melted.
