I think you are all realizing the time constraints I have been having recently. Everything we have been sharing lately is easy and quick to make and perfect for week night dinner. Things have been super busy in our house and I have about 15-20 minutes max of prep time to get dinner done or in the oven. Everything we have been making is super easy to make just like this tater tot casserole recipe.
As much as I would like to be making Cracker Barrel Chicken and Dumplings, Falafel Bowls and Bangers and Mash I simply don’t have the time. I know this season of crazy busy will come to an end, but I know I also can not be alone in dreading dinner time with a time consuming causes more stress so I figured these easy to get on the table recipes will help all of you as well.
What is Tater Tot Casserole?
Tater tot casserole is an easy to make casserole that has layers of ground beef, veggies, cheese and topped off with frozen tater tots. Tater tot casserole has been popular for years (including in our house) because it is easy to make and you only need a pan to cook the meat and a casserole dish to bake the casserole. Easy peasy dishes clean up for a busy weeknight dinner!
Variations of this recipe
Veggies. I use frozen veggies because that is our houses preference when we don’t use fresh. You can also use canned veggies if you prefer. I use frozen green beans but you can also use mixed veggies, peas, carrots, corn or any vegetable your family enjoys.
Ground meat. I use ground beef when making this easy casserole, however if you prefer to use ground chicken, ground turkey or even ground venison they will work as well.
Cheese. My go to cheese is cheddar, but Monterey jack or even Mexican blend cheese work with this casserole recipe.
Canned Soup. I use canned mushroom soup, if you are not a fan then feel free to change it our for cream of celery or even cheddar soup, both of them will work in this recipe.
How Long to cook tater tot casserole
Tater tot casserole takes about 10 minutes to prep, then just bake in the oven at 375ºF for 35-40 minutes.
How to Store Leftovers
Allow the leftovers to cool completely and then cover with foil or plastic wrap and storer in the fridge. It will keep in the fridge for 2-3 days.
Can I make this ahead of time?
To prepare this casserole for the freezer complete everything up until the baking step. You will brown the meat, add the veggies, soup, cheese and tater tots. Then cover the casserole dish with tiny foil or plastic wrap (I prefer tiny foil, and I actually prefer to use tinfoil pans w when I am making meals for the freezer) and then store in the freezer. This casserole will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
When you are ready to bake it, remove the tin foil or plastic wrap (which ever you used) and bake in the oven. You will want to extend the cook time to about an hour depending on your oven.
Tater Tot Casserole Ingredients
- 1 pound ground beef
- 1 small onion, diced
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- pinch Salt
- pinch pepper
- 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce
- 1 10.5 ounce can cream of mushroom soup
- 12 ounces frozen green beans
- 2 cups shredded cheddar cheese
- 2 pound bag frozen tater tots
How to Make Tater Tot Casserole
Preheat the oven to 375ºF.
Brown your ground beef and onion in a medium skillet, season the meat with garlic, salt, and pepper. Drain off any excess grease from the meat, stir in the Worcestershire sauce.
Pour the meat mixture into a 9×13 baking pan.
Spread the soup over the meat mixture and top that with the green beans. Top it off with the cheese.
Layer as many tater tots as you can over the cheese lining them up one next to the other.
Bake for 35-40 minutes until the tater tots are golden brown and crispy
