What is a Hot Chocolate Bomb?
Hot chocolate bombs are a fun and simple way to have fun with hot chocolate. It is a sphere of chocolate that you create in a half sphere mold with melted chocolate. Before sealing the chocolate sphere halves, fill them with hot chocolate mix, marshmallows, and other fillings. The sphere is sealed up and then stored or gifted until enjoyed.
To enjoy, the chocolate ball with hot chocolate powder and other fillings is then placed in a mug, and warm or hot milk is poured over it. The heated milk causes the chocolate sphere to melt, the insides of the hot chocolate bomb to pop open, and then you mix it together making a tasty hot chocolate.
What Supplies do I need to make Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Silicone sphere molds. These molds are essential for creating the spherical shape of the hot chocolate bombs. This is the mold that I use.
Small spoon. Use a spoon to coat the molds evenly with melted chocolate. You will need a small spoon to fill the molds with the hot chocolate mix and mini marshmallows.
Microwave-safe bowl. To melt the candy melts you will need a bowl that you can use in the microwave.

Tips for Making Hot Chocolate Bombs
Make sure the chocolate is melted thoroughly. You want to make sure the chocolate is smoothly melted before you use it in the chocolate molds. You can microwave per the directions on the package or melt the chocolate with a double boiler.
Allow the chocolate to harden fully. When you are placing the chocolate in the freezer to harden back up it is important. You need to let it fully harden or you will have issues removing it from the molds, and you will have issues with the chocolate bombs falling apart.
Use good quality chocolate. Using chocolate melts is the easiest way to go but using a higher quality chocolate will give you a better hot chocolate flavor. If you want a rich and deep chocolate flavor then stick with a real chocolate over candy melts.
Use the right type of mold. If you are using chocolate then you can use acrylic molds or silicone molds, if you are using candy melts then it is a must to use silicone molds.
Make the sphere edges smooth. If the edges of the chocolate cups are not even, heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch. Press the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup and even it out.
Why do you use chocolate melting chips and not chocolate for hot chocolate bombs?
Using chocolate melting chips or candy melts instead of regular chocolate when making hot chocolate bombs offers a few advantages along with making things easier. Personally, because I make these with my kids I want things as easy as possible. I also want things to be as easy as possible for anyone who is finding this recipe and may not have as much experience working with chocolate. Here are a few reasons why making hot chocolate bombs with candy melts or melting chips is better for beginners:
Consistent Texture. Melting chips are designed to have a consistent texture and are specifically formulated to melt smoothly and evenly. There is no need to worry about what the texture will be when the chocolate is melted.
Ease of Use. Melting chips are convenient to work with, as they melt at a controlled temperature, reducing the risk of overheating or burning the chocolate.
Wider Range of Colors and Flavors. Melting chips come in a variety of colors and flavors, offering versatility and creativity
Variations of This Recipe
Add more chocolate drizzle. You can add some more chocolate drizzle on top of the bombs when you are making them. I would suggest either using milk chocolate chips or white chocolate chips if you are adding the drizzle.
Change up the graham cracker crumbs. I personally use the traditional graham crackers but you could use chocolate graham crackers.
Change up the chocolate. I use milk chocolate candy melts, but you could also use dark chocolate candy melts.
Change up the marshmallows. I use the mini marshmallows but you could use a large marshmallow or homemade marshmallows inside the hot chocolate bomb.
Decorations. I use graham cracker crumbs and mini marshmallows with some melted chocolate drizzle, but you can change things up and add the graham cracker crumbs to the inside of the hot chocolate bomb instead of on the top.
Add a Peanut Butter Drizzle. You can also add a drizzle of melted chocolate or melted peanut butter chips on top of the marshmallows and graham cracker crumbs on top of the bomb. This way reminds me of when I use Reese’s peanut butter cups instead of chocolate bars to make S’mores.

How Much Hot Milk do I need?
For these smores hot chocolate bombs, you will want 1 cup of warm milk for each hot chocolate bomb when you are making them into hot chocolate.
What mold is best for making hot chocolate bombs?
You can use silicone molds, acrylic molds, or metal molds. I think that using silicone molds is better because it’s basically foolproof. You can really use any size that you want to and some molds in different shapes can be used as well.
I prefer using the smaller spheres when I am making them for the kids, but when I am gifting them I like to use the larger spheres because I can fill them with more hot cocoa and fun fillings.
If you are using candy melts when making easy hot chocolate bombs, then you will have to use silicone molds instead of using acrylic molds. If you are using melted chocolate then you can use either type of mold to make hot chocolate bombs.
