What is Mississippi Chicken?
Mississippi Chicken is a flavorful and simple slow cooker dish that features chicken breasts or thighs cooked a mixture of butter, ranch seasoning mix, au jus gravy mix, pepperoncini peppers. The combination of butter, ranch seasoning, and pepperoncini peppers gives Mississippi Chicken its distinctive taste, with the peppers adding a subtle heat and tanginess to the dish. Cooking the chicken in the slow cooker allows it to become tender and infused with the flavors of the sauce it is cooked in.
How to Serve Mississippi Chicken
Depending on your preference, you can either shred it using forks or leave it whole. Shredded chicken tends to absorb more of the sauce and flavoring the inside of the chicken as well.
Serve it on top of a base. Make a base so you can layer the cooked chicken and have the flavors combine. You can use cooked rice, mashed potatoes, pasta, or even crusty bread. The base will soak up the delicious sauce and provide a foundation for the dish. Then place the shredded chicken on top with the sauce.
Serve it as the main dish item. Leaving the chicken breasts whole or shredding them make it the focus of the meal. Then add a few side dishes that pair well with the chicken to round out the meal.
Make a Mississippi Chicken Sandwich. This is a great option for serving Mississippi chicken for a crowd along with serving it for dinner. You can use the whole chicken breast or shred the chicken. If serving a crowd I suggest shredding the chicken.
How to Make a Mississippi Pulled Chicken Sandwich
The best way to make a Mississippi chicken sandwich is to shred the chicken when it is done cooking. Using a crusty roll or crusty bread like sub rolls add the cooked chicken along with peppers and sauce to the bread or roll. Top with Mozzarella cheese and put in the oven under the broiler for 2-3 minutes to melt the cheese.

Variations And Substitutions
Butter. I use salted butter but you can also use unsalted butter.
Ranch Seasoning mix. The easiest way is to use the packet ranch, but if you are wanting to skip having additives in your food then use homemade ranch seasoning.
Au Jus Mix. This is the packets of Au Jus gravy mix that you find in the grocery store. If you can not find it or do not have it on hand you can use a packet of Onion soup mix and 4 tablespoons of beef bullion.
Add veggies. You can add diced onions and diced bell peppers along with the pepperoncini peppers.
Chicken. Chicken breasts and chicken thighs will work with this recipe. If you are using chicken thighs then you will want to cut the butter amount in half as chicken thighs have a higher fat content than chicken breasts.
How to store Leftovers
Allow the chicken to cool down to room temperature before refrigerating. Place the leftover chicken in an airtight container or in a bowl and wrap it tightly with aluminum foil or plastic wrap. Consume the leftover crockpot Mississippi Chicken within 3-4 days if stored in the refrigerator.
Can I freeze Mississippi Chicken?
If you don’t plan to eat the leftover chicken within a few days, consider freezing it for longer storage. Place the chicken in a freezer-safe container or resealable freezer bags. Label the container with the date to keep track of its freshness. Frozen Mississippi Chicken can typically last for up to 2-3 months.
How to reheat leftover Mississippi Chicken
When you’re ready to enjoy the leftover chicken, thaw it in the refrigerator overnight if it’s frozen. Reheat the chicken thoroughly. You can reheat it in the microwave, oven, or on the stovetop, depending on your preference.
