How to Color DIY Sidewalk Paint
When making homemade sidewalk paint you can use food coloring or washable paint.
It is really simple to make this homemade sidewalk chalk in any color that you want it to be! So you can let the kids be creative in making the colors they want to have. We have made this recipe to make one bottle of sidewalk paint, so you will want to double, triple this recipe if you are wanting to have a lot of different colored sidewalk paint.
Once you have made the paint, just add a few drops of washable paint or food coloring to your mixture.
How do you Make Puffy Sidewalk Chalk Paint?
It is SUPER easy to make homemade puffy side walk paint. All you need is a few household ingredients and some squirt bottles. Mix it all together and then you have fun outside paint for the kids to have fun with.
How to wash off DIY Sidewalk Paint
If you are going to let it dry after the kids are done painting with sidewalk chalk, then I suggest using the washable paint as it is easier to clean then using food coloring. If you are going to wash it soon after having the kids color with it then use the food coloring.
To clean the paint off your driveway or sidewalk, just grab the garden hose and spray they artwork off. SUPER Easy! The kids also like to be the ones to clean off the driveway, because they then squirt each other with the hose.
How long does Homemade Sidewalk paint last?
This sidewalk chalk paint needs to be used the day that it is made. It will not keep in the plastic bottle. The flour and liquid will separate and cause a mess.

Hi! Can you tell me how long the paint will last after making it? Wondering g if I can make it a few days ahead of time for a party?
Thanks!
Stephanie says
Do not make it ahead of time the nature yeast in the flour will make it explode.
Mary says
How long does this last? Do you need to make a new “batch” every time they want to use it?
Stephanie says
You will need to make a new batch each time. but trust me kids go through this stuff fast!
Teri says
I made this to try with my preschool class. They were great, I unfortunately only had 2 bottles so I set it off to the side and head 2 work. Apparently sitting out on the counter overnight isn’t a great plan…. the bottles exploded! Not sure what chemical reaction occurred but, make, use, toss, make new…..
Stephanie says
Yes that is the wild yeast eating and making gas definitely use the same day.
Nancy says
Has anyone had a problem with the puff paint sidewalk chalk exploding?
Stephanie says
Please use this recipe on the first day of making it, it is not meant to sit around.
Kaitlin says
I am having trouble removing this from my sidewalk and drive way. It’s rained several times, some of that rain being hard storms, and it hasn’t budged off of my driveway. Any tips???
Stephanie says
We normally rinse it off right away. you can try lysol spray to help remove it.
jennifer welty says
lysol is not working for me i was doing it and barely anything came off i also broke mostb of my nails so idk at thisnpoint we tried water and this and nothing worked
Stephanie says
Just allow the sun to dry it out then and it will start to chip away I left some out to see if it would and it did.

I made 6 bottles of this and followed your directions. It was sitting on the counter waiting to be used for 2 days when it blew up all over the walls and ceiling. I did have a lid on each bottle. The worst of this it was not on my counter but my son’s. What a mess they had to clean up on the walls and ceiling. I suggest do not make this!
Stephanie says
This is made with flour if you add water to the flour and just leave it sitting around it turns into a sour which had wild yeast which creates gas and it will explode if it is left in a closed container. This recipe is meant to be used the same day it is made to avoid this reaction.

My chalk came out really runny. Is this normal? Maybe a need a specific dish liquid?
Stephanie says
If this happens add more flour.
Katie says
If I use food coloring will I have trouble getting it off of my sidewalk afterwards?
Stephanie says
If you let it sit too long it will stain it but if you just rinse it off right after they are done you will be fine. Also, Lysol spray can remove food coloring stains I use it on my counters all the time.
Jen C says
This warning belongs at the top of your recipe. I’ve stained my driveway. I will have to pressure wash to get it off. I’m less than pleased.
Stephanie says
I have added more warnings to the page.
Alta says
Will the washable paint or food coloring stain the concrete of not washed off right away?

How long does it last on the sidewalk if you don’t hose it down? Do we have to remove it same day too?
Stephanie says
It will stain the sidewalk if you dont rinse it off after they are done so ive never let it just sit.

Yes!! A coat of paint can make all the difference! I am trying to start seeing things for their potential instead of their current state. Lol!! Thanks for all of these tips! I love your blog so much I added one of your books to my Amazon cart to be purchased next time I have a cartful! Have a great day,
Sarah says
Any advice on getting it off the sidewalk? They used it yesterday and it wouldn’t come off after. Now I’m trying to get it off this morning and it won’t even scrub off 😑
Stephanie says
spray it with lysol and allow it to sit for 30 minutes
Ashley says
I left it on my concrete and now it’s hard as a rock and stuck on there. Any suggestions to get it off?
Stephanie says
spray it with lysol and allow it to sit for 30 minutes
Maggie says
Can we use self rising flour?
Stephanie says
I actually was going to try this week but the weather isn’t allowing me. I just wouldn’t make it in advance because the self-rising can make a lot of gas and it can explode in a closed container.
dae says
This doesn’t come off sidewalks/driveways!
Stephanie says
The directions say to rinse off right after but it will come off.
Aubrie says
This stuff is fun but I’ll never do it again. It sat on the driveway for 5-10 minutes and noW it won’t wash off with the hose. I’m gonna have to go out there and scrub it off. A fun project with the kids now has turned into a nightmare. My little one ran k we to the neighbor’s driveway too with it so I’m gonna have to go scrub her driveway. Really annoyed. Never again.
Stephanie says
your not going to have to scrub it off it will dry up and then crack off if it would rinse off.
Elleny says
Should have read the comments before making this. It was a big mess to clean up. Made a gross paste on my patio. Just glad I didn’t leave any around long enough to explode. I feel like the recipe should be more clear up front about the potential problems!
Stephanie says
Im sorry but its kids paint im not sure why you wouldn’t get a big mess out of it but that’s why its an outside thing so you just wash it down with the hose.
Heather says
If you are worried about stairs s I would suggest grating actual chalk and adding it into the mix instead of food coloring or paint.
H says
Stains not stairs
Jacquelyn says
Thanks for the fun activity. I’m sure with a little common sense we will be able to avoid any major mishaps- looking forward to using it, especially now that sidewalk chalk is hard to find in stores during the quarentine!
Sara says
Yikes! I really wish I would have read through all of the comments before making this. I apparently missed that it doesn’t come off well. I used the washable paint on asphalt. It’s been over a week & a be half with lots of rain, but it can still be seen. 😬 Unfortunately, I did an obstacle course with it for a friend’s kids. But she can’t get it out, and they are selling their house. 😢 I feel terrible.
Stephanie says
Really i just used this recipe with the kids last week and the kids went to far with it and I couldn’t spray it off with the hose but its almost off already.
Brooke says
Wow, these comments! Mind-blowing. I thought we all learned decades ago that food coloring will stain. Use caution and common sense when using it, right? I just made multiple batches with my 4 year old – we painted names, maps, pools, trees, and squiggles all over our carport and rinsed it with a hose after we were done. Rinsed right off. Unlike everyone else, we WILL be making this again! Great, super fun activity!
