What is a dump cake?
A dump cake is a dessert that’s incredibly easy to make because it typically involves “dumping” the ingredients into a baking dish without much preparation. The result is a delicious, layered dessert that is flavorful and always a hit when I make them.
The name dump cake comes from dumping boxed cake mix on top to form the crumble, not the texture of the dessert itself.
For this pumpkin dump cake, you will have the bottom layer that is semi- firm like a pumpkin and the top layer is the crumble made with the cake mix, butter and chopped nuts.
The bottom layer of the cake will have a slightly gooey consistency, but it will keep enough firmness to maintain its form when sliced. The top layer will be a cake-like/crumble-like texture.
Variations of this Recipe
Use Yellow Cake mix. If you are using yellow cake mix you will want to add 2 tablespoons of pumpkin pie spice to the cake mix before sprinkling it on top of the wet ingredients.
Use Pumpkin Puree. If you do not have canned pumpkin pie filling you can use pumpkin puree. When you are using pumpkin puree then you will want to add 3 teaspoons of pumpkin pie spice mix to the pumpkin puree. If you are using homemade pumpkin puree then you will need 3 and 1/3 cups.
Change up the crumble topping. I personally prefer to use chopped pecans. If you are not a fan of them you can use chopped walnuts, chopped toffee bits, or crushed graham crackers. You can also add a sprinkle of brown sugar, cinnamon, ground ginger, ground cloves, or use 2 teaspoons pumpkin pie spice on top if you want to add more spice flavor.
Add chocolate chips. If you love the combination of chocolate and pumpkin, add some chocolate chips on top of the pumpkin filling before pouring the cake mix on top.
How to Serve Pumpkin Dump Cake
Pumpkin dump cake is a delicious dessert on its own, but you can make it even more delightful by serving it with various toppings
Whipped Cream: Top each serving with a generous dollop of freshly whipped cream. The creamy texture of the whipped cream complements the rich and moist cake.
Vanilla Ice Cream: Serve warm pumpkin dump cake with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. The warm cake and cold ice cream create a delightful contrast in temperatures and flavors.
Caramel Sauce: Drizzle warm caramel sauce over individual servings. The sweet and buttery caramel enhances the pumpkin and spice flavors.
How to Store Pumpkin Dump Cake
After baking, let the pumpkin dump cake cool to room temperature in the baking dish. Once it has cooled, cover the baking dish with plastic wrap or aluminum foil. Store in the fridge for 3-4 days.
Can I freeze Pumpkin Dump Cake?
Yes! If you want to store the pumpkin dump cake for an extended period, you can freeze it.
Cut the cake into individual servings or leave it in the pan, but be sure to wrap it tightly with plastic wrap and aluminum foil. If you plan on freezing it I do suggest baking it in an aluminum foil pan. Label the package with the date for reference and place it in the freezer. The cake can be stored for up to 2-3 months in the freezer. To Thaw place the pumpkin dump cake in the fridge overnight.
