How Long to Bake a Sweet Potato in the Oven
It is not going to be exactly the same for everyone as the size of the sweet potatoes and the oven you have play a part in how well they bake.
I like to bake mine at 400ºF and they take between 45 and 55 minutes depending on the size of the sweet potatoes. I try to make sure all of mine are the same size so that I am not waiting on some to finish cooking while others are already done.
How can you tell a sweet potato is done baking?
Sweet potatoes take quite a bit of time to bake, however you will know they are done because when baking they release a sweet caramelized juice and start to wrinkle up. To be sure that they are done cooking just stab it with a knife or fork and if it is done baking it will slide right in with no struggle. If you get some resistance when stabbing it keep baking it for a bit longer.
How to Serve
Serve as the side dish to a holiday meal or a normal weeknight meal to have a tasty side dish that is packed with nutrition. Some of our favorite main dishes to make are Roasted turkey breast, steak kabobs, bacon wrapped scallops, grilled steaks, and garlic parmesan chicken.
With baked sweet potatoes you can go either savory or sweet and either way you serve them they are going to be totally delicious. When they are done baking, slice a line down the top of the potato and press on the side to open it and season then mix the sweet potato flesh with the toppings and enjoy. You can eat both the the skin and the inside. For savory add salt, pepper and butter for sweet add cinnamon, brown sugar and butter when they are done baking.
Important tips
Don’t skip piercing the sweet potatoes with a fork before baking or you will end up with a large mess in the oven.
Choose sweet potatoes that are roughly they same size. This will make it so all of them cook the same, having sweet potatoes that are different sizes can make it so that not all of them cook the same.
Line the baking sheet with foil or parchment paper for easy clean up.
Let them cool for 5 minutes before serving.
