Oreo Truffles or Oreo Balls, whichever you want to call them you have to add the word delicious with them. Creamy Oreo cookie and cream cheese center coated with melted chocolate makes for the perfect Oreo treat. This Oreo balls recipe is the perfect treat for any occassion!
Oreo Truffles Recipe
Every time I make this oreo balls with cream cheese recipe I think about my friend Sarah. I met her while Tom was active duty stationed in New Jersey and currently, she lives way far away in Alaska right now but these Oreo Balls always remind me of her.
She used to make me a batch of this Oreo balls recipe anytime things were getting stressful. If I had a final that week, Oreo truffles. If I had a bad morning she would surprise me with Oreo truffles in the afternoon.
Anytime we got together for dinner or to celebrate a holiday (since being military most people don’t have their family around to join them) she brought oreo balls.
I procrastinated making them myself for many years because making them made me miss her and her family like crazy, but a few years ago I thought it was time to have the kids enjoy them too. I made them and the kids loved them and now I make them as often as I can.
Oreo Balls are so easy to make, and they are one of my favorite oreo desserts to make. I am sure you are going to love them as much as we do!

Variations of this recipe
Change up the Oreos. You can use original Oreos, peppermint Oreos, vanilla Oreos or mint Oreos paired with the crushed peppermints.
Change up the toppings. You can add any topping you want or just a drizzle of a different type chocolate on top of the Oreo Balls.
Change up the chocolate. I used white chocolate for dipping and dark chocolate for the drizzle. You can use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate for the dipping, and then you can use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate for the drizzle and use any combination of the types of chocolate when making these Oreo truffles.
Decorate them for a holiday. You can also use colored candy melts to decorate these Oreo balls to match the holiday you are celebrating.
Tips for Making Oreo Balls Recipe
Use regular stuffed Oreo Cookies, while double stuffed Oreos are amazing you do not want to use them when you are making Oreo Balls.
Don’t skimp on the cool time, it is important to chill the Oreo Cookie and cream cheese mixture to harden up a bit to form the soft creamy chocolaty center of the Oreo Balls.
Use good quality chocolate. Using a higher quality chocolate will give you a better hot chocolate flavor. I recommend Godiva, Ghirardelli, Lindt, or Baker’s brand chocolate.
What chocolate to use for dipping?
When you are making Oreo Balls you want to use quality chocolate or candy melts. I have tried making them with chocolate chips but I am not a fan of how they melt and then the way it hardens after I dip the Oreo balls. If you have them on hand you can use them, but they are not my first choice in chocolate.
- Ghiradelli melting wafers. These are my personal favorite for making anything with melted chocolate because they always have a smooth finish, taste delicious and it’s microwave safe.
- Candy melts. I love using this if I’m looking to use a certain color like red, green, blue, purple, or yellow for the different holidays.
- Almond bark. This is another great option for chocolate to use when making Oreo Balls if you’re looking for something different than just chocolate.
What is the best way to melt chocolate?
I personally like to melt chocolate in a double boiler but you can also melt chocolate in a bowl in the microwave if you want to. If you have never melted chocolate in a double boiler, check out how to melt chocolate in a double boiler.
How do you melt chocolate in the microwave?
Melting chocolate in the microwave is easy. Add the chocolate to a microwave safe bowl – my best options are glass or ceramic bowl. Then microwave in short 30 second bursts and stir in between each burst heat until the chocolate is fully melted. If your chocolate is too thick to work with, add 1/2 teaspoon of coconut oil or shortening.
How to get a smooth finish when dipping in Chocolate
There are a few tings you can do to make sure you get a smooth finish when you are dipping the Oreo balls into the melted chocolate.
- Make sure the chocolate is fully melted.
- Make sure the Oreo ball filling is fully chilled.
- Dip the chilled oreo ball in the melted chocolate by placing the ball on a fork, dip in the chocolate and use a spoon to coat the ball. Gently tap the side of the bowl as you remove the Oreo ball from the melted chocolate to remove excess chocolate.
How to crush the Oreos
I find the best way to crush the Oreo cookies is to stick them all into a blender or a food processor and pulse them to crumbs.
