Tips for Making this Recipe
Prep everything before getting started. Having a tray lined with wax paper ready to go along with the chocolate in a bowl that can quickly be dipped into before starting will make your life much easier.
Allow chocolate to harden fully. Allow the melted chocolate candy melts to harden fully before moving on to the next step in decorating the cookies to avoid having the colors mix into each other and spread.
Change up the cookies. For this recipe, I use Nutter butter peanut butter sandwich cookies, but if you have a peanut allergy, then you can use other cookies. Milano cookies, rectangular sugar cookies, and Oreo Cookies will also work with this recipe.
Use Melting chocolate. If you are not a fan of candy melts then you can use white melting chocolate. You will have to use food coloring to color the white chocolate in the colors that you need for decorating the cookies.
How to Melt chocolate for dipping
There are two different ways to melt the chocolate. I suggest using the microwave way if you have kids making them. It is also essential that you don’t make the chocolate too hot. You want it to be hot enough that it is fully melted but not so hot that it will melt the peeps.
Double Boiler Method. When you are melting chocolate for dipping, the best way to do so is with a double boiler. You can buy a double boiler in the store, but they are so easy to make at home with items you already have in your kitchen. If you have never used a double boiler read how to make a double boiler at home.
Melt chocolate in the microwave. You want to use a microwave safe bowl and heat for 30 seconds at a time. In between each 30 seconds, stir the chocolate and continue the pattern until the chocolate is melted and smooth.
How to Color White Melting Chocolate
If you can not find yellow or navy blue melting chocolate, then you can use white melting chocolate and food coloring to color the colors you need. Use oil-based food coloring or fat-soluble pigments. Candy melts are formulated with fats (often vegetable oils) so using water-based dyes can cause the mixture to seize or become grainy. Only a few drops may be needed, as these colorants are usually quite concentrated.
- Place the white candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl or use a double boiler. Heat in short bursts (about 15–20 seconds) if using a microwave, stirring in between. Avoid overheating to prevent burning or changing the texture.
- Once your candy melts are completely melted, add the oil-based colorant drop by drop. Stir thoroughly after each addition to ensure the color blends evenly. Continue adding color until you achieve your desired shade. Remember, it’s easier to add more than to fix an overly intense color.
- Once colored, work quickly if you’re dipping, molding, or decorating, as candy melts can begin to set once they cool.
