What is a Hot Chocolate Bomb?
Hot chocolate bombs are a fun and simple way to have fun with hot chocolate. It is a sphere of chocolate that you create in a half sphere mold with melted chocolate. Before sealing the chocolate sphere halves, fill them with hot chocolate mix, marshmallows, and other fillings. The sphere is sealed up and then stored or gifted until enjoyed.
To enjoy, the chocolate ball with hot chocolate powder and other fillings is then placed in a mug, and heated milk poured over it. The heated milk causes the chocolate sphere to melt, the insides of the hot chocolate bomb to pop open, and then you mix it making a tasty hot chocolate.

To use this hot chocolate bombs recipe after they have set heat 2 cups of milk in the microwave or on the stove then add the hot chocolate bomb to the mug. The hot milk will melt the chocolate and the hot cocoa chocolate bomb filling inside will come out, use a spoon to mix the milk with the hot chocolate bomb to make an amazing cup of hot chocolate.
How Much Hot Milk do I need?
Depending on the size of them you will need 1 – 1.5 cups of milk. For a stronger flavor use less milk, but i suggest never using less than one cup of milk.
How to Store Hot Chocolate Bombs
Allow the DIY chocolate bombs to set completely after you have made them. Then store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use. If you are giving DIY hot chocolate bombs as a gift you can put them in plastic wrap or plastic containers.
How long do hot chocolate bombs last?
DIY Hot chocolate bombs will keep for up to 2 months if stored in an airtight container in a cool place. You can store them in the fridge if you want to and I suggest doing so if your house is really warm.
Tips for Making Hot Chocolate Bombs
Make sure the chocolate is melted thoroughly. You want to make sure the chocolate is smoothly melted before you use it in the chocolate molds. You can microwave per the directions on the package or melt the chocolate with a double boiler.
Allow chocolate to harden fully. While you might be impatient like myself, when you are placing the chocolate in the freezer to harden back up it is important. You need to let it fully harden or you will have issues removing it from the molds, and you will have issues with the chocolate bombs falling apart.
Use good quality chocolate. Using chocolate melts is the easiest way to go but using a higher quality chocolate will give you a better hot chocolate flavor. If you are wanting a rich and deep chocolate flavor then stick with areal chocolate over candy melts.
Use the right type of mold. If you are using chocolate then you can use acrylic molds or silicone molds, if you are using candy melts then it is a must to use silicone molds.
What kind of chocolate is best for making hot Cocoa bombs?
You want to use quality chocolate that has cocoa butter in it for the best results if you are making chocolate hot cocoa bombs.
If you are wanting to make different flavored cocoa bombs then the best route is to use candy melts when you are making them.
I would totally avoid using chocolate chips as they are not going to work, they do not melt properly for what you will need them to do when making the spheres and they do not melt properly when hot milk is added to them to make the hot chocolate drink.
What are the best candy melt flavors to use when making Hot Chocolate Bombs?
If you want to make fun flavors I find it best to use flavored candy melts. I also find it best to use a double boiler when melting them. If you have never used a double boiler read up on how to melt chocolate in a double boiler for all the tips on how. There are lots of flavored candy melts, but some of our favorites to use are:

What type of Hot Chocolate do you use to fill them?
Hot chocolate bombs are filled with hot chocolate powder. You can change up the flavors of the hot chocolate that you use when you are filling them. There are lots of different hot chocolate flavors that you can use, some of our favorites are:

What filling do you put in Hot chocolate bombs?
Aside from the hot chocolate powder, you can also add other fillings to add more flavors and designs to the cup of hot chocolate. Depending on my mood I will make them with marshmallows, sprinkles or, candies when making easy hot cocooa bombs.
What Marshmallows are best for using in Hot Chocolate bombs?
I find it best to use Mini Marshmallows or dehydrated marshmallows ​when I am making easy hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows but you can also use flavored marshmallows like chocolate marshmallows, strawberry marshmallows, or even rainbow marshmallows
What mold is best for making hot chocolate bombs?
You can use silicone molds, acrylic molds, or metal molds. I think that using silicone molds is better because it’s basically foolproof. You can really use any size that you want to and some molds in different shapes can be used as well.
I prefer using the smaller spheres when I am making them for the kids, but when I am gifting them I like to use the larger spheres because I can fill them with more hot cocoa and fun fillings.
If you are using candy melts when making easy hot chocolate bombs, then you will have to use silicone molds instead of using acrylic molds. If you are using melted chocolate then you can use either type of mold to make hot chocolate bombs.
How much Hot cocoa mix will fit into a hot chocolate bomb?
Molds made 2 1/2″ in diameter to fit about 1 Tablespoon of hot cocoa mix, the larger the sphere mold the bigger the hot chocolate bomb will be and for larger ones, you will need to add more fillings.
How to Seal Hot chocolate bombs
There are a few different ways that you can seal the hot chocolate bombs.
Warm plate method. Heat a glass plate in the microwave and rub the rim of the sphere on the plate to melt it just a little bit and then put the 2 sphere halves together to close them.
Spoon and chocolate method. Use a spoon and dip it in the melted chocolate to add extra chocolate around the edge of the sphere edge and then close te 2 halves together.
Piped chocolate. Add melted chocolate to a piping bag and then pipe chocolate on the edge of one of the spheres and then put them together.

Marshmallow Hot Cocoa Bombs. Milk chocolate with hot chocolate and marshmallows.
Red Velvet. Use red chocolate melts and Red velvet hot chocolate mix. Add mini marshmallows inside or on top, drizzle with white or milk chocolate.
White Chocolate. Use white chocolate melts and add white hot chocolate mix inside.
Milk Chocolate. Use Milk Chocolate melts and add hot cocoa mix inside, you can use just about any flavor hot chocolate mix that you want to with this one.
Pumpkin Spice. Use white chocolate and pumpkin spice hot chocolate mix inside.

Reese’s. Crush up peanut butter cups and place some inside, drizzle with milk chocolate, and then sprinkle crushed up peanut butter cups on top of the chocolate drizzle.

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs Recipe
Place chocolate in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave in 30 second intervals or use a double boiler to melt chocolate.
Place 1 tablespoon melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. Repeat with 12 silicone mold halves. Reserve the remaining melted chocolate.
Place the chocolate filled molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
Remove molds from the freezer and gently peel the silicone away from the chocolate cups.
If the edges of the chocolate cups are not even, heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch. Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup and even it out. Repeat with all of the chocolate cups, as necessary.
Fill 6 of the molds for hot chocolate bombs with 1 tablespoon hot cocoa mix and 5-10 mini marshmallows.
Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch. Press one of the empty chocolate shell halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store.
