DIY Puffy paint is the perfect inside paint to make for the kids and have them enjoy. With only 3 ingredients and about 5 minutes of time you can have this fun DIY Puffy Paint Recipe for the kids to paint with!
DIY Puffy Paint
One of our favorite things to make and do is sidewalk paint. They love how it gets puffy when they are painting on the side walk and how easy it is to use. Of course during the chilly months we are unable to get outside and enjoy it so I needed to come up with an indoor solution for us to enjoy. Bring on the DIY Puffy paint!
We love making Homemade Finger paint, but the kids are getting older and they wanted something a bit more fun and so we made homemade puffy paint and the kids LOVED every minute of painting with it. Yes even my older kids (ages 11, 13 and 15) had fun painting with this homemade paint.
We have made this homemade paint a few times over the past few years, and each time I have taken photos and then not gotten the post up so when I made it with Hannah recently I took more photos and finally am getting it up for you guys to enjoy with your kids too!

Best Shaving Cream for Puffy Paint
I find the best shaving cream to use when making homemade puffy paint is the cheap stuff. I was able to grab my shaving cream over at the dollar tree because for this it doesn’t have to be the best quality shaving cream you just need it to make it light and fluffy. If you are wanting to grab it online, grab the Barbasol shaving cream.
How to Color Homemade Paint
When you are making homemade paint the best way to color it is using food coloring. There are so many different colors that you can pick from that you can have a full rainbow of paint colors for the kids to paint with!
My kids personally prefer the neon colors but you can make any color that you want to.
If you are wanting lots of colors, just double or triple the ingredients when you are making the homemade paint.
How to Use Puffy Paint
Place the puffy paint in a small bowl and allow your child to paint with a paintbrush.
You can also pour the paint into a small ziptop bag, cut one bottom corner off and allow your child to pipe the paint onto their paper.
If you want to make paint squeeze bottles, just add the paint to a squeeze bottle and let the kids squeeze the paint onto the paper.
DIY Puffy Paint Ingredients
- 1 cup shaving cream
- 1/2 – 1 cup white glue
- food coloring
How to Make Puffy Paint
In a large mixing bowl stir together the shaving cream and glue. I start with 1/2 a cup of white glue and then add more depending on how it mixes. Depending on the weather I have found sometimes I need more glue and other times I need less glue. I start with 1/2 a cup and mix it with the shaving cream and then add more 1/4 cup at a time.
Next, add in a few drops of your desired food coloring to make the color you want.
Divide the paint mixture into 3 small bowls.
Add a few drops of your desired food coloring and mix well.
