Seriously making homemade butter is probably the easiest thing that you can make at home. You only need 1 or 2 ingredients depending on if you are making salted butter or making unsalted butter.
The kids and I have made homemade butter many times, it is so easy to make that all of the kids can make it on their own now. Depending on the time that we have is what determines what method of how to make butter we use. If you are wanting to make this a fun activity to do with the kids, then you are going to want to use the mason jar homemade butter method. I find that the kids have more fun doing it that way.

Making Homemade Butter with Kids
A plus to making butter is that the kids can help too! There are two different ways to make homemade butter, both give you the same result. AMAZING Homemade Butter! Both ways to make homemade butter are SUPER easy!
One of my favorite things to do with the kids is get them active in the kitchen. I think it is very important that they know how to navigate the kitchen, navigate cooking and cook from scratch. It is a good thing they all love to cook and we enjoy the time we spend in the kitchen together.
What do you use homemade butter with?
You can use homemade butter exactly the same as you do the butter you buy in the store. This diy butter melts perfectly on pancakes, waffles and muffins. Plus you can use it for any of your cooking.
My kids favorite way to enjoy this butter recipe is on bread. They love making fresh bread and while it is baking in the oven making butter and then enjoying warm fresh bread with fresh butter on top. Some of our favorite bread recipes to use homemade butter on:
How to make Salted butter
Making salted butter is super easy. All you have to do is add 1/4 teaspoon of salt per 1 cup of heavy cream that you add to your mixer or mason jar.
How to Make Flavored Butter
Once the butter is fully churned you can add in different herbs, honey or other flavors that you want to your homemade butter.
How long will homemade butter last?
Homemade butter will stay good for 3-5 days at room temperature. If you are storing homemade butter in the fridge it will stay good for 7-10 days.
It is important that no matter how you store your fresh made butter that you store it in an air tight container.
What is the liquid when I made Homemade butter?
After churning the butter there is going to be a liquid left over. This is buttermilk and it is perfect to be used in other recipes. All you have to do is store it in an air tight container. The fresh buttermilk will last for a week stored in an air tight container in the fridge.
Homemade Butter Ingredients
The ingredients are the same no matter which method of making homemade butter you choose.
- 1 quart heavy cream
- Stand mixer or a glass jar with a lid (we use a mason jar)
- Salt (if making salted butter)
How to Make Homemade Butter Using a Stand Mixer
It is super easy to make butter using your stand mixer.
Pour the heavy cream into your mixer bowl add salt if you are making salted butter. Then the mixer on to medium speed.
Let the mixer churn the heavy cream into butter. In about 10 minutes or so you will have homemade butter! You will also see buttermilk at the bottom of the bowl. You can keep or discard the buttermilk.
Remove the clumps of butter from the mixer bowl and put it into a small bowl. Pour a small amount of cold water on top of it and shape your butter. You can shape it into a ball or a roll, the preference is yours.
Then just store it in an air tight container in the fridge for 7-10 days or at room temperature for 3-5 days.
How to Make Homemade Butter In a Mason Jar
Making butter in a mason jar is my kids favorite way and it involves them doing all the work while having fun.
Fill a mason jar half way with heavy cream. Depending on how much cream you are wanting to use to make butter will depend on the size of the mason jar that you use. You want to make sure there is enough room for the cream to mix around in the mason jar and turn into butter.
Once the cream is in the mason jar put the lid on and be sure it is on tight.
Then get to mixing! I hand it off to the kids at this point, and all you have to do is shake the mason jar. You will see the butter forming in the mason jar.
Once all the butter is done churning you will have a clump of butter and you will see liquid at the bottom of the mason jar, that liquid is buttermilk. You can keep it in another mason jar or discard it, whichever you choose.
Remove the clumps of butter from the mason jar and put it into a small bowl. Pour a small amount of cold water on top of it and shape your butter. You can shape it into a ball or a roll, the preference is yours.
Then just store it in an air tight container in the fridge for 7-10 days or at room temperature for 3-5 days.
*Nutrition information is for the full amount of butter that comes from using 1 quart of heavy cream.

I’m going to figure out how to strap it to the wheel of their bikes & send them churning around the neighborhood!

It can be put in an ice cold stainless steal wide mouth mug(need to be big enough to get a rubber spatula inside) and wire it to the mid bar of the bike. It may take a bit longer to churn if there are no bumps on the road. LOL I did a cooking class lesson on making butter this fall. They used to put in bags and hang on the camels or mules depending on what century and country. The liquid coming off is the buttermilk. That is good to drink. Then you are supposed to add water to rinse the butter and shake longer to “clean” the butter to get the extra whey out. Then strain off the water and repeat the rinse step.

I had to google why mine turned into whipping cream instead of butter. Turns out it needs to be room temperature. That would have been nice to know….so thanks for all your help 🙄
Stephanie says
I have never had to make it with room temperature butter sorry you couldn’t make it.

Wow… so very rude, and it is unnecessary. I’ve made this just fine with cold heavy cream. 🤷🏼♀️
Thank you for this recipe!! 💕
