There are lots of recipes that claim to be the Best homemade brownies, but I can tell you they are not. I am a baker by trade, went to school for it and I know a good brownie when I taste one. I promise you, this one is the best from scratch brownie recipe.
I have tried other from scratch brownie recipes that claim to be the best, to see if they top this one that I have been making for years, and they all failed to meet my high standards for a chewy, chocolaty fudgy brownie.
These Homemade Brownies are amazing! Seriously I am not sure there is a better dessert than a chocolaty, moist, and delicious fudgy brownie! Chocolate Brownies are one of my favorite desserts! They are so easy to customize and once you have found the best homemade brownie mix recipe you will never go back to the boxed mixes. Are Homemade Brownies better then Boxed Mix?
Yes! The answer is always yes when you are making things homemade. This is the best brownie recipe ever and it will blow all boxed brownie mixes away. This easy brownie recipe is one I have made for years and since making them homemade for the first time I have skipped boxed mix.
Why don’t you add chocolate?
I have found the best from scratch brownies are made with good cocoa powder and not chocolate. Some brownie recipes call for adding melted chocolate, I have found that to get perfectly moist brownies, that have nice crispy, tops and edges that cocoa powder is a must. You do not need to use melted chocolate to make perfect fudgy brownies, cocoa powder is the must have ingredient.
Variations of this recipe
What is great about these fudgy brownies is you can fancy them up if you would like to. If you are adding add ins to your from scratch brownies you will want to add them after the wet and dry ingredients are mixed and gently fold them in.
Addins. I love adding things like nuts, chocolate chips, pretzel bites, and more to make homemade customized brownies. M&Ms, Reece’s Pieces and chopped up chocolate bars are also great add ins.
Add frosting. Sometimes I even spread some peanut butter buttercream or chocolate buttercream on top of them.
Add chocolate chips. You can add 1 cup of milk chocolate chips, dark chocolate chips, white chocolate chips or peanut butter chocolate chips to this fudgy brownie recipe, or any combination of the flavors if you want to. You can also use chocolate chunks instead of chocolate chips.
Tips for Making Homemade Brownies
Using our Homemade Brownie Mix. If you already have batches of homemade brownie mix made, and you can not find the baking instructions for them you are in luck! You can use these directions with any homemade brownie mix you have on hand. If you have mix on hand already but can not find the directions to make them use just a smidge under 4 cups of homemade mix with the wet ingredients listed in our list.
Don’t overbake them. Dry brownies are not something anyone loves, so I always err on the side of caution when making from scratch brownies and remove them sooner rather than leaving them in for longer. You can always remove these fudge brownies from the oven, check to see if they are done, and put them back in if needed.
Allow the chocolate brownies to cool before cutting. I know it is hard to wait until when you have been smelling the chocolaty brownies baking in the oven and then to wait even longer for them to cool a bit. However, when you are slicing these easy brownies it is best to let them cool for a bit first.
How to Serve Brownies
We all know that perfect brownies are delicious on their own and don’t need anything added to them when they are done baking to be amazing. However you can make some amazing treats with baked brownies that the family will love.
- Brownie Sundae. Add a scoop of ice cream on top of the brownie, drizzle some caramel sauce and/or chocolate sauce and top with homemade whipped cream for a tasty brownie ice cream sundae.
- Holiday Brownies. Decorate the brownies for your favorite holidays, you can make snowman brownies or Christmas Tree Brownies.
- Top with frosting. Once the brownies are cooled you can put a layer of frosting on top, chocolate buttercream frosting, peanut butter buttercream frosting and caramel buttercream frosting are all great options.
What size pan do I need when Making brownies?
The size pan you use will depend on how thick you like your brownies. Regardless of the pan size you will still end up with rich chocolate flavor brownies. You can use a glass pan or a metal pan and they will bake the same. 9×13 pan for thin brownies and 9 x 9 square pan for thick brownies.
How do you know when brownies are done?
When brownies are perfectly baked, the center of them will look undercooked. Asbrownies cool they continue to cook, so you want to remove them before the center is fully cooked or you will have dry brownies.
To tell if the brownies are done cooking you want to stick a toothpick in the center, if it comes out with wet brownie batter then they need to bake longer. If it comes out with crumbs then it is time to remove the brownies from the oven.
How Long do you bake brownies?
How long brownies need to bake for depends on the size pan you are using. If you are using a 9 x 13 pan bake for 22-25 minutes. If you are using a 9 x 9 pan bake for 25 – 28 minutes
How to Store Brownies
Homemade brownies are best stored in an airtight container. Allow the homemade brownies to cool completely before putting them in a container. They will keep for about 3 days if stored properly.

hi im so going to try these, they look delicious and i love the idea of premixing the dry ingredients and keeping a batch at the ready! one thing only…i found it initally confusing that on the recipe you list the first ingredient as i
1 batch of home made premix, then the wet and then the dry. I went and looked at recipe for the premix and its the same as the itemized dry ingredients. So basically on your list i am assuming you mean ! batch of premix or the dry ingredients listed, right? Many thanks Kiki

I make this recipe on a regular basis, have used regular flour and King Arthur gluten-free all purpose flour…both work well. My husband thinks that the gluten-free flour taste a little gritty. Great recipe and will not buy another boxed brownie mix again. Thank you for sharing!
