I wanted this one to be simple and so we used the best sugar cookie dough, a circle cookie cutter, homemade royal icing and then heart sprinkles to make this simple Christmas cookie. This sugar cookie recipe is the one we use for all of our sugar cookie recipes because it really is the best sugar cookie recipe.
When you use this homemade sugar cookie dough, the cookies will keep the shape that you make them before putting them in the oven. There is no need to worry about cookie spreading as long as you follow the steps in the recipe for making them.

Tips for Making Sugar Cookies
Use unsalted butter. That way you are controlling the amount of salt you are adding to your baked goods.
When baking sugar cookies, bake them until they are just slightly browned on the edges. If they are too browned, they are overbaked.
Once you remove the cookies from the oven and let them set on the baking sheet, they will continue to bake for a few minutes as the cookie sheet is still hot. After a couple of minutes, remove them from the sheet and place them on a cooling rack so they can continue cooling.

Grinch Sugar Cookie Ingredients
- 3 cups flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cups butter 2 sticks
- 1 egg
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- Bright green Food Coloring
- Heart Sprinkles
- 1 cup royal Icing
How to Make Grinch Sugar Cookie
In a large bowl or with your stand mixer cream the granulated sugar and butter until it is fluffy. If using the stand mixer it will take about 5 minutes.
Once the sugar and butter are creamed together, add in the egg and vanilla extract.
In a medium sized bowl mix the flour, baking powder, salt. Use a whisk to mix everything together thoroughly.
Slowly add the flour mixture to the sugar, butter, egg, and vanilla extract mixture. Mix everything until well incorporated.
Put a handful of the freshly made dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll until you get your desired thickness and set aside still on the parchment paper.
Repeat with the rest of the sugar cookie dough.
Put the rolled dough including the parchment paper, on a cookie sheet and refrigerate for at least 10 minutes. You can keep it in the fridge for longer if needed.
Once your dough is chilled completely it is ready to use cookie cutters to make the cookie shapes you are wanting to make.
Use your cookie cutters and cut out your cookies. Then reroll the scraps and continue cutting out cookies until all of the sugar cookie dough is used up.
Place cookies on a baking sheet and bake at 325° F for 10 -15 minutes. Keep an eye on them, you want them to be finished cooking but not brown. Depending on your ovens heat power will depend if they need the full 15 minutes to bake.
Let cool completely before decorating with Royal Icing.
While the cookies are cooling make your royal icing and use the bright green food coloring to color the icing.
Once your frosting is ready, using a teaspoon, add the frosting onto the cookie in a circular motion until your “circle” is full of frosting.
Then add the sprinkles.
Let the frosted cookies set for approximately 30 minutes so the frosting can set.
