Hot chocolate bombs are a fun and simple way to have fun with hot chocolate. It is a sphere of chocolate that you create in a half sphere mold with melted chocolate. Before sealing the chocolate sphere halves, fill them with hot chocolate mix, marshmallows, and other fillings. The sphere is sealed up and then stored or gifted until enjoyed.
To enjoy, the chocolate ball with hot chocolate powder and other fillings is then placed in a mug, and heated milk poured over it. The heated milk causes the chocolate sphere to melt, the insides of the hot chocolate bomb to pop open, and then you mix it making a tasty hot chocolate.
You can buy them on Amazon, Etsy, and at local shops however, they are expensive and it is not hard at all to make DIY hot chocolate bombs. It does take a little bit of time and patience to get the hang of it, but you will love how easy it is to make hot chocolate bombs at home once you learn how to.

To use this hot chocolate bombs recipe after they have set heat 2 cups of milk in the microwave or on the stove then add the hot chocolate bomb to the mug. The hot milk will melt the chocolate and the hot cocoa chocolate bomb filling inside will come out, use a spoon to mix the milk with the hot chocolate bomb to make an amazing cup of hot chocolate.
How Much Hot Milk do I need?
Depending on the size of them you will need 1 – 1.5 cups of milk. For a stronger flavor use less milk, but I suggest never using less than one cup of milk.
How do you store Hot Chocolate Bombs?
Allow the DIY chocolate bombs to set completely after you have made them. Then store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use. If you are giving DIY hot chocolate bombs as a gift you can put them in plastic wrap or plastic containers.
How long do hot chocolate bombs last?

Tips for Making Hot Chocolate Bombs
Make sure the chocolate is melted thoroughly. You want to make sure the chocolate is smoothly melted before you use it in the chocolate molds. You can microwave per the directions on the package or melt the chocolate with a double boiler.
Allow chocolate to harden fully. While you might be impatient like me, when you are placing the chocolate in the freezer to harden back up it is important. You need to let it fully harden or you will have issues removing it from the molds, and you will have issues with the chocolate bombs falling apart.
Use good quality chocolate. Using chocolate melts is the easiest way to go but using higher quality chocolate will give you a better hot chocolate flavor. If you are wanting a rich and deep chocolate flavor then stick with areal chocolate over candy melts.
Use the right type of mold. If you are using chocolate then you can use acrylic molds or silicone molds, if you are using candy melts then it is a must to use silicone molds.
What is the best type of mold for making hot chocolate bombs?
You can use silicone molds, acrylic molds, or metal molds. I think that using silicone molds is better because it’s basically foolproof. You can really use any size that you want to and some molds in different shapes can be used as well.
I prefer using the smaller spheres when I am making them for the kids, but when I am gifting them I like to use the larger spheres because I can fill them with more hot cocoa and fun fillings.
If you are using candy melts when making easy hot chocolate bombs, then you will have to use silicone molds instead of using acrylic molds. If you are using melted chocolate then you can use either type of mold to make hot chocolate bombs.

What You Need to Make Grinch Chocolate Bombs
Along with the ingredients listed below, you will need a silicone mold, bowls, and a spoon.
What size mold do I use for hot chocolate bombs?
The best molds to use when making Grinch hot chocolate bombs are the 2 inch or the 2.5 inch chocolate sphere molds.
What filling do you put in Hot chocolate bombs?
For these grinch hot chocolate bombs, we used hot chocolate mix and marshmallows. You can also add sprinkles to the inside if you want to.
Aside from the hot chocolate powder, you can also add other fillings to add more flavors and designs to the cup of hot chocolate. Depending on my mood I will make them with marshmallows, sprinkles or, candies when making easy hot cocoa bombs.
What Marshmallows are best for using in Hot Chocolate bombs?
I find it best to use Mini Marshmallows or dehydrated marshmallows when I am making easy hot chocolate bombs with marshmallows but you can also use flavored marshmallows like chocolate marshmallows, strawberry marshmallows, or even rainbow marshmallows.
Variations of this recipe
Change up the hot chocolate. You can use any flavor of hot chocolate that you want to, the green candy melts are vanilla flavored and work well with many different flavors of hot chocolate. My go-to flavor are white chocolate hot chocolate mix, mint hot chocolate mix, or milk chocolate hot chocolate mix to fill them.
Change up the color. You can use dark green or bright green candy melts when making these easy hot chocolate bombs, I know some people like dark green, and others like bright green, use whichever color you prefer.
Change up the decorating. I used red heart sprinkles on the outside but you can also draw a heart with melted red candy melts, or if you want to get really creative draw a grinch face on them with melted candy melts.
Grinch Hot Chocolate Bombs Ingredients
Dark Green Candy Melts or bright green candy melts. Whichever color you prefer when making Grinch treats you can use.
Hot Cocoa Mix. You can use white chocolate hot chocolate mix, mint hot chocolate mix or milk chocolate hot chocolate mix to fill them.
Mini Marshmallows or dehydrated marshmallows. We used white, but it would be fun to get Christmas colored marshmallows too!
Bright Green Edible Glitter.
Red Heart Sprinkles. You can also add more festive sprinkles with the heart shaped sprinkles if you want to but they are optional, but add a colorful touch and make a great gift for friends and family or teachers if they love The Grinch. If you want to use red candy melts to draw a red heart on the chocolate bomb you can totally do that too.
How to Make Grinch Hot Chocolate Bombs
Liberally sprinkle the dry silicone molds with the green edible glitter. Set aside.
Place dark green candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package.
Place 1 tablespoon melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves. Reserve the remaining melted chocolate.
Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
Remove molds from the freezer and gently peel the silicone away from the chocolate cups.
If the edges of the chocolate cups are not even, heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch. Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup and even it out. Repeat with all of the chocolate cups, as necessary.
Fill 6 of the molds with 1 tbsp hot cocoa mix and 5-10 mini marshmallows.
Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch. Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
With the reserved chocolate, pipe a little bit of the melted chocolate on the back of a red heart sprinkle and immediately place it randomly on a hot cocoa bomb. Repeat until there are 5-6 red hearts on each hot cocoa bomb.
Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
