I am not a huge sports fan, in fact I am not one to sit and watch sports on TV at all because I have no interest in sitting on the couch but I do enjoy seeing them in person. Nascar is really big in the Poconos, and even though I grew up here it was never something that we did. When Pocono Raceway reached out to me about exploring the raceway and having our first Nascar experience I was excited to try something new. I am all for trying new things, you never know what you are going to find yourself enjoying and if you don’t try it then you won’t ever know.
The kids were a little hesitant at first because they did not know what to expect. I was nervous about how to navigate the area and what all a Nascar race entails. Thankfully I have a friend who LOVES Nascar and gave me the run down on everything I needed to know, including where the bathrooms are at the racetrack!
We headed out on Sunday to Pocono Raceway, even with it calling for rain to get the fun started. We started our day with a tour of the Garage. This was perfect for getting the kids (and myself) in the know about Nascar and racing. We got to go behind the scenes (which you can to with a Garage pass) and see the garages and the cars. We learned that they work on the cars to make sure they are ready for the race in the garage and there is a lot of testing that goes on with the cars to make sure they are following the rules.
We got rained out on Sunday and headed home and then on Monday we headed back to the Pocono Raceway to see the race! The kids all picked out the number of the car they wanted to cheer for and we watched the race. Part of the race we watched in the stands (which you need to make sure you get hearing protection because it is loud) and then the other part we hung out in the Paddock area near the pitt.
The kids got to see the car that Dale Earnhardt Jr drives come in and get fixed while racing. While we were standing there a lady came up and said hello and the kids were talking to her about the race, come to find out she is married to one of the pitt guys for Dale Earnhardt Jr and she gave the kids hot lug nuts off the car one of the times it came in the pitt!
As we were heading back to the parking lot from the Paddock area the kids were stopped and then each given one of the Victory Lane hats that there are only 100 of by one of the race workers!!! I love when things happen that you are “in the right place at the right time” because the kids were so excited to have the special hats!
We all had a blast at the Pocono Raceway for our first Nascar race and if you are wondering if you should take the adventure with your kids then I say go for it! It was our first time and had a blast and the kids want to do it again! I will continue to live by always try something because you never know if you will like it or not and our first Nascar Race at Pocono Raceway is the perfect example of why.
