I love making homemade apple pie and Lattice apple pie, but if I am being 100% honest there are times where I just do not want to put in all the work that is needed to make an apple pie. That is where a tasty Apple Galette comes in. You might as well call this a lazy apple pie because you get all the flavors of apple pie but with half the work needed.
This easy apple galette recipe is one that I can whip up and get on the table whenever the mood for apple pie strikes without all of the work of making homemade pie crust and homemade apple filling. This easy apple galette has the perfect balance of apples, my favorite fall spices, and a buttery crust. To make things easy instead of a homemade crust, I use puff pastry sheets to make the pastry crust. This still gives me a perfectly flaky crust without all of the work needed to make a flaky pastry crust.
Homemade fruit galette is the perfect dessert to make when you are wanting something delicious with apples but super easy to make. When you make this easy apple dessert it will quickly become a family favorite and it is great for using apples up when you pick too many. What is Apple Galette?
An apple Gillette is a flat round crusty cake that is basically a pastry filled with fruit, in this recipe apples and then baked on a baking sheet. They’re essentially pie-like but easier to make, think of it like a free form pies that don’t need crimping or weaving.
To make things easy for this Apple Galette recipe we have started the recipe using premade puff pastry sheets.
Difference between a pie and a galette
While they are similar I like to think of them as cousins. Both are fruit filled desserts, however, a galette is flat and baked on a baking sheet, while a pie is filled and baked in a pie pan.
What are the Best Apples to use for a Galette?
You can use quite a few different types of fresh apples, but it is best to choose baking apples that are tart or sweet. Some good options are: Honeycrisp, Pink Lady, Granny Smith, Gala, or Cortland. If you are using golden delicious apples, do not slice them very thin because they are a softer apple.
How to fill Apple Galette
You can put the apples in a thin layer of apples or put the slices together in a stack, whichever you prefer. How I do it depends on how fancy I want the dish to look and how much time I have to make this dessert.
Is Galette served warm or cold?
You can serve this at room temperature or warmed.
How to Serve Apple Galette
Cut the galette into triangles to serve. You can serve it with a sprinkle of powdered sugar on top or top each wedge with whipped cream or a scoop of ice cream.
How to Store Apple Galette
Store in an air tight container or wrapped tightly with plastic wrap in the fridge. It will keep in the fridge for up to 5 days.
Can I freeze Apple Galette?
Yes, you can. After baking allow it to cool completely and then wrap in plastic wrap and thin foil and then place in a freezer bag and put in the freezer. It will keep in the freezer for up 3 months. When you want t to enjoy it, remove it from the freezer and let thaw in the fridge. Serve at room temperature or warm.
Tips for making Apple Galette
Evenly sliced apples. It is best to have all the apples sliced evenly and uniformly.
Don’t over stuff. You do not want to overstuff the crust with too much filling and overflow the apples out of the crust.
Don’t stress the crust. When you are folding the edges of the dough don’t worry about making it look perfect or making it a perfect circle. It is perfectly ok for it to have a rustic look, the end result will still be a delicious apple dessert that everyone will enjoy.
Puff Pastry Apple Galette Ingredients
- 4 red apples
- 1/2 cup brown sugar
- 1/4 cup powdered sugar
- 2 tablespoon chopped walnuts
- 2 tablespoon chopped hazelnuts
- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
- 3 sheets puff pastry dough
How to Make Easy Apple Galette Recipe
Preheat the oven to 350ºF.
Cut the apples in half, remove the cores, and cut them into thin apple slices.
Take the puff pastry out of the freezer and let it sit for 5-6 minutes to soften.
Lay greaseproof paper on your kitchen counter, place the puff pastry dough sheets on it and stick the dough by pressing the joints with your fingers.
Cover it with wax paper and Roll out the dough according to the size of a round mold you want with a rolling pin, if you are using a mold, if not just roll it out to a circle that is 12 inches around.
You can make it a perfect circle if you want to or just leave the edges rough.
Place the sliced apples in the center of dough.
In a small bowl mix the brown sugar and cinnamon.
Sprinkle the apples with walnuts and hazelnuts.
Then with the brown sugar and cinnamon mixture.
Fold the pastry dough on the edges over the fruits, This doesn’t need to be a perfect crust shape, just do it as it works.
Bake in the oven for 20-25 minutes, until the crust is golden brown and the apples are tender.
Sprinkle with powdered sugar and serve.
