Do I need to boil Pasta before making Slow Cooker Mac and Cheese?
I have tried many ways to make mac and cheese in the crockpot without boiling the noodles first and I have not been a fan. I do not like the way the texture of the macaroni turns out, so for our crockpot mac and cheese you will cook the noodles for 2 minutes less then what the package directions say before dumping them into your crockpot.
It doesn’t actually add too much extra time to making macaroni and cheese in the slow cooker because while the noodles are cooking you can chop up the cheese.
What type of Cheese is best to use?
For this Slowcooker Macaroni and Cheese, you can change up the type of cheese that you use aside from the Velveeta. For this recipe, I used cheddar cheese and Pepper Jack Cheese but you can change up the Pepper Jack Cheese and use Monterey Jack cheese. If you prefer to use white cheddar cheese instead of yellow cheddar cheese you can do that as well.
Best Noodles for Macaroni and Cheese
I use elbow noodles whenever I make this homemade mac and cheese. However, if you do not have elbow noodles on hand you can use any tubular noodles and it will work great. The important thing about your noodles is that you cook them until right before they reach al dente. Which is about 2 minutes before the stage where they are completely cooked. They will continue cooking while in the slow cooker.
Tips for Making this Recipe
Don’t over cook the noodles. You want them to still be a bit on the hard side when you put them into the slow cooker.
Keep warm in the slow cooker. When you are making this crockpot mac and cheese know that crockpot times can vary depending on the brand of crockpot. If you find that the mac and cheese is finished cooking sooner than expected you can turn the crockpot setting down to warm and it will stop the cooking while keeping the macaroni and cheese warm.
What to Serve with Macaroni and Cheese
I know a lot of people like to have a ‘full meal’ and use baked mac and cheese as a side dish instead of a main dish. If you are going to serve baked mac and cheese as a side dish I suggest serving a meat dish and a veggie dish as well. Use the veggie side dishes I listed above and one of these tasty main dish recipes!
- Ranch Chicken
- Asparagus Stuffed Chicken
- Ham Steaks
- Pork Meatloaf
- Grilled Steaks With Blue Cheese Butter
- Tuna Cakes
How to Reheat Slow Cooker Macaroni and Cheese
Like most pasta dishes, this tastes even better heated up the next day. If you have some leftovers to heat up, put some on a plate and cover in a damp paper towel. This will stop the macaroni from getting dry. Then microwave until hot! It’ll taste amazing!
