Cool Whip Easter Eggs
Coloring eggs is an Easter tradition in our house that we do every year. For many years we used the dye kits from the store that you use with white vinegar and I always ended up having a huge mess. While the kids had fun coloring the eggs, every year at least one if not more of the cups of coloring was knocked over. That mess is not fun to clean up at all.
A friend of mine told me about how she makes Shaving cream dyed Easter eggs and we tried that one year and they came out amazing. I shared about them on the blog, and some people had concerns about the chemicals in the shaving cream with the eggs so I set out to find a solution. I tested out other things of a similar consistency to shaving cream that were food items to see if it would work and found that using whipped topping worked perfectly.
This easy easter egg dying method is perfect for the whole family and the end result is beautifully colored easter eggs. If you have toddlers and younger children the whipped topping easter eggs method is great because there is no worry of them putting their hands in their mouth with something that is not safe.
Using cool whip or any other brand of whipped topping and food coloring to color hardboiled eggs for Easter is great for those who want to avoid using chemicals when using shaving cream to color easter eggs.
You can make beautiful colored Easter eggs with almost no mess when you use the Cool Whip Easter Eggs dying method. It is perfect for kids and adults and there is no worry of the egg dye cup spilling and making a huge mess!

Tips for making Cool Whip Easter Eggs
- Use a deep dish. Using a deep dish makes it easier for the eggs to be covered in the cool whip and for the kids to roll the eggs around.
- Thaw the cool whip. For best results thaw the cool whip so you can easily spread it in the baking dish and easily roll the eggs around in the cool whip and food coloring.
- Use Gel food coloring. The colors will be brighter and more vibrant when you use gel food coloring instead of liquid food coloring. If you are using liquid food coloring I suggest adding a few drops of vinegar to the whipped cream or doing the vinegar submerging to get a better coloring on the egg shells.
- Leave the eggs in the whipped cream for at least 30 minutes. To get bright colors you want the eggs to sit for quite a bit of time. I suggest at least 30 minutes but prefer to leave them in the cool whip and food coloring for 45 minutes to an hour.
- Use Vinegar. For extra vibrant colors before rolling the hard boiled eggs in the cool whip and food coloring put them in a bowl of vinegar for 1-2 minutes. You do not have to do this but I find you get even brighter colors when you do.
- Be Gentle. When you are rinsing the cool whip off of the eggs be gentle so you do not crack the shells.
- Use disposable gloves. If you are worried about the food coloring dying your hands, using plastic disposable gloves will keep the food dye from staining your hands.
How to make the Colors brighter when Coloring Eggs with Cool Whip
- Leave the eggs in longer. These colored easter eggs will be a light color if you do not leave them in the cool whip for 30 minutes or more. The longer you leave them in the cool whip and food coloring mixture the darker they will get.
- Use vinegar. You can also soak the hardboiled eggs in vinegar for 1-2 minutes before putting them in the cool whip to make the colors darker.
- Add vinegar to cool whip. Add a few drops of vinegar to the cool whip when you are adding the food coloring in and mix it thru out the cool whip with the food coloring and the colors will be darker.
- Gel food coloring. Using gel food coloring will give darker and brighter colors compared to using liquid food coloring.
