How to Cook Hard-Boiled Eggs
There are a few different ways that you can make hard-boiled eggs. For this recipe, you will want to have 12 hard-boiled eggs already cooked and cooled before getting started.
Pick whichever way you prefer to cook hard-boiled eggs, and then allow them to cool. If you need to cool them quicker you can use a cold water bath by putting setting up a bowl of ice water and placing them in it for 10-15 minutes.
- Instant pot hard boiled eggs
- air fryer hard boiled eggs
- oven baked hard boiled eggs
- stove top boiled hard boiled eggs
Tips for Making Deviled Eggs
Darker Colored Eggs. If you want the coloring on the eggs to be darker you will want to leave them in the water with food coloring longer. The longer they sit in the food coloring the darker the coloring will be.
Piping Bag for Filling. You can use a spoon to put the filling into the egg whites however they look so much better when you use a piping bag and a frosting tip. To use a piping bag fill the bag with the deviled egg filling and then gently squeeze the bag while moving in little circles to pipe the filling into the egg white. If you are wanting to get fancy with the egg filling use a star tip on the piping bag. You can also do this with a plastic baggie, however you will not be able to make them as fancy and use a frosting bag tip, but they will look much nice then just spooning in the filling. It is also much easier to pipe the filling in than to spoon it in.
Chill Before Serving. Refrigerate the deviled eggs for at least 30 minutes before serving. Chilling allows the flavors to meld and the filling to set properly, making them easier to handle and enhancing the taste.
How to Color Egg Whites
Coloring egg whites is easy, add 3 cups of water to a bowl and add 10-15 drops of food coloring to the water. Then place the eggs into the water and let them sit and absorb the color. You can add 1 teaspoon of vinegar to the water to make the colors darker.
Variations of this Recipe
Add more spices. You can add a pinch of garlic powder, and onion powder along with the salt and pepper to the deviled egg mixture.
Change up the Deviled Egg recipe. We use a basic mayo and mustard deviled egg recipe for this one but you can make bacon deviled eggs or any of your favorite deviled egg filling mixtures when making these Christmas Deviled eggs and then put the garnish on top.
Change up the colors. I used green and red but you can change the colors to be any color that you want to. You can make it so some of the eggs are left white so you have green, red and white deviled eggs for Christmas.
Color the deviled egg filling. If you want to have the deviled egg filling colored just add a few drops of food coloring to the deviled egg filling mixture when you are making it.
Change up the mustard. You can use spicy brown mustard or dijon mustard in place of the yellow mustard.
Garnish. If you want to add more festive holiday colors you can by adding things like parsley, fresh dill, fresh rosemary, or small pieces of red bell peppers as garnish on top of the deviled egg filling. You can also use pink peppercorns or pomegranate seeds that when placed together look like holly berries.
Can I make Hard-boiled Eggs in advance?
Yes, you sure can! I like to hardboil a bunch of eggs all at once and then I can easily and quickly make deviled eggs with the hardboiled eggs I already have in the fridge. You can hard boil eggs up to a week in advance and use them as needed.
If you want to prep deviled eggs ahead of time, cut the eggs in half and make the filling.
Cook the eggs in boiling water, cut them in half, and place them on a tray covered with plastic wrap or in airtight container for up to one day.
Attach a large star piping tip to your ziptop bag, fill it with your Christmas deviled egg mixture, and store it in the refrigerator.
Just before serving, use the piping bag to swirl the filling into each eggshell and garnish with green and red toppings.
You can also make these Christmas deviled eggs the night before you are going to serve them and store them in the fridge.
How long Can Deviled Eggs be left out?
Deviled eggs should not be left at room temperature for more than 2 hours.
How to Store Deviled Eggs
Deviled eggs should be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator. It is best to consume deviled eggs within 2 to 3 days for the best taste and quality.

Hardboiled Eggs. You will need already cooked and cooled hard-boiled eggs for this recipe. Cook your hardboiled eggs by your preferred method.
Water. Water is used to color the eggs with the food coloring. Depending on the size of the bowl you are putting the eggs into, you may need more water than we used.
Liquid food coloring. We use red food dye and green food dye but you can change the colors up if you want to. This is used to color the egg whites and give them an orange hue, creating a festive appearance for the deviled eggs.

Yellow mustard. Mustard adds flavor to the deviled egg mixture. You can also use brown mustard or Dijon mustard.
