Chocolate Valentine’s Day Cupcakes with Chocolate Buttercream
I love going all out for holidays, however I have to admit that this year I am waaayy behind where I normally am in prepping and planning. I have our Valentine’s Day Breakfast planned out already but that is where it ends. I am thinking of doing a quick and easy Valentine’s Day lunch of Heart Quesadilla or maybe heart pizza but again I have not gotten that far yet. I know it is in 2 days, I will figure it out hopefully before Valentine’s Day gets here.
But one thing for sure this Valentine’s Day is I am looking for super simple and easy because our week is filled up already with the kids school and activities. These Valentine’s Day Cupcakes are perfect!
Using my favorite chocolate cupcakes and the best chocolate buttercream frosting I can have these done in no time. Then I took a short cut and used Valentine’s Day sprinkles and Reese’s Peanut Butter Hearts on top. Super super easy!

How to make Chocolate Valentine’s Day Cupcakes.
Make the chocolate cupcakes.
Make chocolate butter cream frosting.
Top cupcakes using the cupcake swirl method with the chocolate frosting.
Place an unwrapped Reese’s Peanut Butter Heart on top.
Chocolate cupcakes Ingredients
- 1.5 cup packed brown sugar
- 1 tablespoon vanilla extract
- 3/4 cup granulated white sugar
- 1.5 cups hot brewed coffee
- 3/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 2 1/4 cups all purpose flour
- 1.5 teaspoon baking soda
- 3/4 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 12 tablespoons room temperature unsalted butter
- 3 large eggs
Chocolate Buttercream Ingredients
- 1 1/2 cups room temperature butter
- 4 cups powdered sugar
- 3/4 cup cocoa powder
- 4 tablespoons heavy whipping cream
- 2 teaspoons vanilla extract
- Pinch of salt
How to Make Chocolate Cupcakes
Preheat the oven to 350˚ F.
Put paper cupcake liners in your cupcake pans or you can use silicone, which ever ones you prefer.
In a medium bowl whisk together the hot brewed coffee and cocoa, until dissolved and set aside.
In the bowl for your stand mixer, combine the flour, baking soda, baking powder and salt.
Then add the butter and sugars.
Beat on medium-high speed of your mixer until light and fluffy, about 3 minutes. Add in the eggs one at a time. Mix in the vanilla.
With the mixer on low speed, add the dry ingredients in three additions alternating with the coffee-cocoa mixture, beginning and ending with the dry ingredients.
Mix each addition just until incorporated, being careful not to over mix.
Divide the batter between the prepared liners, filling each about two-thirds of the way full.
Bake about 20 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Let cool in the pans briefly, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
How to make Chocolate Buttercream Frosting
Place your butter in the bowl of your mixer. Mix on medium speed until the butter is nice and creamy.
Turn the mixer down to the lowest setting and slowly incorporate the powdered sugar and cocoa powder into the butter.
Once you have added all the powdered sugar in to your mixture, add in the vanilla extract, heavy cream and salt.
Turn the mixer up to medium-high speed and continue mixing for 10 minutes until light and fluffy.
Assemble Chocolate Valentine’s Day Cupcakes
Scoop frosting into piping bag and frost the cooled cupcakes. Open 24 Reese’s Peanut Butter Heart.
Sprinkle Valentine’s Day sprinkles on top and place an unwrapped Reese’s Peanut Butter Heart in the center.
