Chocolate Chip Waffles Recipe
Homemade waffles are one of my kid’s favorite breakfasts to make. There are so many varieties of homemade waffles, like these fluffy Chocolate Chip Waffles that waffles for breakfast never get boring! This is a recipe my whole family loves and it is so easy to make.
My normal go to for waffles for breakfast is Belgian Waffles, with a side of fruit and everyone is happy. When I am wanting to sneak some fruit into the kids, I go for the apple waffles. When it is a birthday, I go for the pecan pie waffles or the funfetti waffles. However, when I want to be the BEST mom ever I get fancy with our homemade waffles and make one of our tasty variations, including the best chocolate chip waffles recipe.
The great thing about waffles, is that I can mix up the batter, heat up the waffle maker and they cook with very little work. When I am making chocolate chip waffles for a large crowd (ie when the kids all have friends over) these are perfect. I heat up my oven to 200 degrees, put a baking sheet in the oven, and make them one by one. Then as they are done I put them in the oven to keep warm, and when there is enough for everyone all of the waffles are still warm.
I also love that I can make a big batch of these chocolate chip waffles and freeze them for the kids to enjoy later.

How many waffles does this recipe make?
This Chocolate Chip Waffles recipe makes 3 waffles in a standard circle waffle maker. You can easily double and triple this Chocolate Chip waffle recipe to make as many waffles as you need. If you are planning to make a large batch, do yourself a favor and get one of the family sized waffle makers.
Do I need to preheat the waffle maker?
It is also important that you preheat your waffle maker before adding in any batter. I find letting it preheat for 5-10 minutes is perfect. So a bit after I am done mixing all of my homemade waffle ingredients together, I plug the waffler maker in so it can preheat while my batter sits.
Do I need to let the waffle batter sit?
You might also be wondering if letting the batter sit is a must. My answer is yes. If you are a pinch on time, then you can start pouring the batter on the waffle maker as soon as you are done mixing it. However, I find that the sitting time makes for better end results.
How do you make waffles crispy?
A crispy waffle is an important thing to have when you are making homemade waffles. To make sure you have crispy waffles instead of soggy waffles having a hot waffle iron is the most important thing. If the waffle iron is not heated completely then you will end up with a soggy waffle.
How long do you cook waffles in a waffle maker?
Depending on the brand of waffle maker this can differ so it is important to check the instructions for the specific waffle maker that you have, but normal cook times for making waffles in a waffle maker is 4-6 minutes.
Can I make these into mini waffles?
You can use this recipe to make smaller waffles and use a small waffle maker to make them the same size as the grocery store frozen waffles. They will freezer great and they fit perfectly in the toaster to reheat them. You will get more smaller waffles than larger waffles.
How to Make waffles for a crowd
If you are making a lot of waffles because you have a crowd of people but want to make sure everyone has warm crispy waffles it is so easy. Double or triple the recipe (or more if needed). Heat your oven to 200°F and then place a cookie sheet in the oven. Then cook the waffles in the waffle maker.
As the waffles are done cooking put them on the cookie sheet in the oven. When you are done making all the waffles and are ready to serve them they will all still be warm and crispy on the outside just like when they were done cooking in the waffle maker.
How to Serve Chocolate Chip Waffles
My kids love these waffles with a little bit of butter and some maple syrup, but there are lots of delicious ways you can serve these waffles no matter if you are having them for weekday breakfasts or a special treat for special occasions. You can also turn them into a tasty dessert too!
- Extra chocolate. Add some chocolate syrup, hot fudge, extra chocolate chips, or melted chocolate chips on top.
- Whipped cream. You can also serve them with whipped cream on top, we like using homemade whipped cream but store bought works too.
- Peanut butter. If you are wanting a delicious combination spread peanut butter on top of these fluffy waffles, the chocolate peanut butter combination is amazing.
- Fresh fruit. Top these bananas or fresh berries and then a drizzle of maple syrup.
- Make a Chocolate chip pancake sundae. Top the sundae with a scoop of ice cream, extra chocolate chips, some hot fudge, and whipped cream for a decadent dessert.
How long will waffles last in the fridge?
If you are making a batch of waffles for the week you might not want to freeze them. That is ok, you can store waffles in the fridge for 2-3 days in an airtight container. To reheat them use your toaster and put the waffles in the toaster on the medium setting for 2-4 minutes.
Freezing Waffles
This waffle recipe freezes great. All you have to do is let the waffles cool, then freeze them in a single layer on a baking sheet. Once the waffles are frozen wrap them in plastic wrap with the serving size you normally cook when you have a waffle. Be sure they are wrapped tight with the plastic wrap, then store them in a freezer bag.
Frozen waffles will last for up to 3 months in the freezer.
How to reheat frozen waffles
Reheating homemade waffles is easy and there are 2 ways to reheat frozen waffles.
The first way to reheat frozen waffles is to put them in the toaster on the medium setting for 2-4 minutes depending on your toaster. You can use the microwave for 30 seconds to a minute to reheat frozen waffles. I prefer to reheat them in the toaster.
