What are substitutions that I could make?
Change up the ice cream. For this recipe, I used Vanilla Ice Cream, but you can change up the ice cream flavor. Chocolate ice cream, chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream, and peanut butter ice cream are all great options if you want to change up the ice cream.
Whole milk. For a dairy-free option, consider using coconut or almond milk.
Cookies. You can make your own cookie dough if you’d like. This homemade chocolate chip cookie recipe is one of our favorites. If you are in a time crunch, then you can totally use store-bought cookies as well.
Don’t bake the cookie dough. If you are using store-bought cookie dough that can be eaten without being baked, you can use that instead of baking the cookie dough.
Tips for making homemade Milkshakes
Let the Ice Cream Soften Slightly. Let it sit for 5–10 minutes at room temperature before blending—it’ll mix more easily and create a smoother shake.
Whipped cream. When you are making these easy homemade milkshakes, they taste amazing with whipped cream. You can use homemade whipped cream and a whipped cream dispenser or store bought whipped cream, whichever you prefer.
Use whole milk. If you want the creamiest milkshake consistency, using whole milk is best. You can use skim milk or 2% if that is what you have on hand, but it will be thinner than if you are using whole milk.
Chill Your Glasses. Pop your glasses in the freezer for 10 minutes beforehand—helps the shake stay cold and thick longer.
Make It Extra Thick. Use less milk and more ice cream—or freeze your milk into cubes and blend those in.
Top It Off. Don’t skip the fun toppings: whipped cream, sprinkles, cherries, crushed cookies, or a drizzle of syrup.
What are Good Milkshake Toppings to Use?
There are lots of toppings that you can add to your chocolate chip cookie milkshake to elevate it to the next level and make it even more tasty and enjoyable.
Cookie-inspired toppings. Crushed chocolate chip cookies, mini cookies (like Chips Ahoy minis or Famous Amos), and edible cookie dough bites are perfect choices. For a fun presentation, try coating the rim of your glass with frosting or melted chocolate, then press on cookie crumbs.
Classic Milkshake toppings. A generous swirl of whipped cream, a maraschino cherry on top, and a few rainbow or chocolate sprinkles.
Do I have to use Chocolate Chip Cookies when making this milkshake?
No. You can use sugar cookies and refrigerated sugar cookie dough if you want easy to make fresh baked cookies. You can also use chocolate cookies, Oreo Cookies, Nutter Butter cookies or any other cookie that you like instead of chocolate chip cookies.
Will I have leftover tiny cookies?
Half of the tiny cookies will be added to the milkshake itself; the rest will be reserved for the topping. So whether you have leftovers depends on how many cookies you add to the top of the milkshakes. There’s a good chance you’ll have leftover cookies.
Do I have to use the other half of the cookies to top the milkshake?
If you would prefer not to top the milkshake with the remaining cookies and enjoy them as cookies on their own that is fine.
You can also choose to top the milkshake with a chocolate drizzle on top as well as inside the glass. Depending on what type of cookie you choose to make, you may even consider a caramel drizzle or chopped nuts as a topping.
Can I make this dairy-free?
Yes! To make it dairy free be sure to use non-dairy ice cream, non-dairy milk, be sure to check the chocolate syrup for dairy (it is alright to omit this if you can’t find a dairy free version), and you may need to make your own cookie dough or find a dairy free one, such as Sweet Loren’s.
How can I thin my milkshake if It is too thick?
If your milkshake is thicker than you would like, you can always add more milk to thin it out. But if you accidentally get it too thin, you can add more ice cream.
