Tips For Traveling with Pets

When we go on vacation, we often like to take along our family pets. This may be possible, depending on where we are going and what method of transportation we are using. Before traveling with our pets, it is important that our pets have their vaccinations up to date. This will ensure that they will not pick up any diseases from other animals while you are out and mixing with other animals. Here are some tips on traveling with pets that will make your vacation a little more comfortable.

Tips for Taking Your Pets on a Vacation

1. Flying with Your Pet– If you intend to fly and want to take your pet, it is important that you check with the airline to see if there are any restrictions. Visit the veterinarian to ensure that the animal is healthy enough to fly, and all vaccines are up to date. Some pets that are small enough may be able to be taken on board, if they are in a secure carrier and can fit under the seat in front of you. Larger pets will have to be held in the baggage hold in a secure cage with absorbent padding. You can also add a blanket and a toy for comfort.

2. Take Along a Leash– No matter what mode of transportation you utilize, once you have arrived at your destination, place your pet on a leash and allow them to gather their wits and relax by going for a walk, once they have shaken off the travel bumps. This will help to reduce any stress.

3. Traveling by Car– If you are traveling by car; remember to have your pet in a pet cage at the back of the vehicle. This will help to ensure the safety of your pet and well as yourself and family members. A loose pet can become an extraction, which can cause an accident that can result in injury or death. Remember to make frequent stops if you are traveling with a small dog or pet, smaller animals have smaller bladders and cannot hold their water as long.

4. Take Along a Pooper-Scooper– If you plan to take your dog on any public property, you will have to pick up their waste. Do not forget to take along a pooper-scooper to pick up after them. You will also need to take along some small plastic bags to carry their waste to the disposal bin. There are many different ones to pick from (find them here) and don’t forget the poop bags too 🙂

Traveling with your pet can be enjoyable, if you are well prepared. Plan ahead and see whether you can take your pet on vacation with you. Most importantly, ensure that your pet is used to being around other animals and people. If this seems to be impossible, it is best that you board your pet at your local boarding kennel.
