If you are looking for the best homemade guacamole recipe, this is it. I make it for snacks, parties, and to go along with our Mexican dinners and there are never any leftovers. This easy homemade guacamole recipe is one of my family’s all-time favorite recipes.
For a while, when I first got married I was buying store bought guacamole and then I learned how easy it is to make at home with just a few main ingredients and a few minutes of time that after the first time making this delicious guacamole I never went back to the premade stuff again. The packaged guacamole doesn’t even compare the awesomeness of making it guacamole at home and once you see how easy it is to make a good guacamole at home you won’t be wanting the store bought stuff again!
Making your own guacamole is super simple and only takes a few fresh ingredients to have an amazing flavor and once you try this Homemade Guacamole Recipe you will never buy the prepackaged stuff again!
The only downside to this Homemade Guacamole Recipe is that everyone in my house devours it so quickly that it doesn’t last more than 5 minutes on the table if I don’t make a double batch.
What to Serve with Guacamole
Tacos. We have taco night a lot in our house and as much as everyone loves homemade salsa, homemade guacamole is their favorite. It doesn’t matter if I am making crockpot chicken tacos, crockpot taco meat, Taco Cups, Chicken Taco Lettuce Wraps, Taco pockets or chicken burrito bowls, guacamole is always going to be made also. Use this recipe on top of any tacos you are serving for amazing flavored tacos.
In a recipe. There are lots of recipes that call for guacamole as an ingredient, California Chicken is one of our favorites. Homemade guac is also great in 7 layer dip and layered taco dip!
As a Dip. Dinner time is not the only time we enjoy this delicious dip! It is perfect for serving as a snack with some cheese quesadillas or tortilla chips.
If we are having a party this easy guacamole recipe is always on the menu! However, if you are going to be making it for a party I highly suggest doubling or even tripling the recipe. When having a party this homemade guacamole goes perfect with a batch of sheet pan nachos!
As a side dish. While not the healthiest thing ever when I add the tortilla chips, chips and guac are great with any Mexican dinner as a side dish.

Can I make guacamole ahead of time?
Yes, as long as it is stored properly you can make it ahead of time.
How to Store Guacamole
Guacamole needs to be stored in an air tight container in the fridge or freezer.
How long does Homemade Guacamole last?
If stored properly, fresh guacamole will keep in the fridge for 1-3 days. If you are freezing it then it will keep for about 3 months in the freezer.
How to Freeze Homemade Guacamole
After you have made the Guacamole spoon it into zip-close bags, squeeze all of the air out
How do you tell if Guacamole has gone bad?
When there is a puddle of brown liquid in the storage container and the guacamole has lost its bright green color it is time to throw it out.
Why does my homemade guacamole turn brown?
One of the worst things ever is to go in the fridge expecting some tasty guacamole and finding that it has turned brown. That browning that you see is the oxygen hitting the guacamole and causing it to oxidize. The good thing is there is a simple trick that will help you keep your fresh guacamole from turning brown in the fridge.
How to Keep Guacamole from turning brown
When you are getting ready to store your guacamole pour it all into a plastic air-tight container. Press the guacamole down with a spoon to remove all of the air pockets. Gently pour 1/2 inch of cold water, lemon juice, or lime juice so it covers the surface of the guacamole completely. Put the lid on top of the container
When you go to serve the homemade guacamole drain the water off the top before scooping any guacamole out of the container. When you are putting any left overs back into the fridge follow the same steps of adding water to the top of it before putting it back in the fridge.
Variations of this Recipe
Change up the onions. I like using white onions, but you can also use red onions.
Add spice. If you want to add spice add some chopped jalapeno pepper.
Change up the tomatoes. I use whatever I have on hand, cherry tomatoes, grape tomatoes, beefsteak tomatoes and Roma tomatoes will all work for making fresh guacamole.
How to Remove the seed from an avocado
I find it easiest to stab the seed with a knife and gently pull the seed out. You can also squeeze the sides of the avocado and pop the seed out.
Homemade Guacamole Ingredients
- Ripe Hass Avocados
- tomato
- white onion or red onion
- chili powder
- garlic powder
- lime juice – you can use fresh lime juice or bottled lime juice
How to make Homemade Guacamole
Wash and dice the onions and tomatoes and set them aside.
Cut your avocados in half length wise and remove pit.
Using a spoon scoop the insides from all of the avocados into a large bowl.
Once all of the avocados are scooped out use a potato masher or a fork and smash all of the avocado. You can make is as smooth or as chunky as you would like to. I personally like to have chunks in my guacamole.
