Tips for Making Christmas Oreo Balls
Don’t skimp on the cool time, it is important to chill the Oreo Cookie and cream cheese mixture to harden up a bit to form the soft creamy chocolaty center of the Oreo Balls.
Use good quality chocolate. Using a higher quality chocolate will give you a better hot chocolate flavor. I recommend Godiva, Ghirardelli, Lindt, or Baker’s brand chocolate. You can use melting wafers, candy melts or almond bark when making this recipe.
Use regular stuffed Oreo Cookies, while double stuffed Oreos are amazing you do not want to use them when you are making Oreo Balls.
Use a cookie scoop. Using a small cookie scoop makes it easier to shape the oreo cookie balls into circles after you have made the cookie mixture.
How to Melt Chocolate in the Microwave
Place the chocolate in a microwave-safe bowl. Microwave in short intervals by heating the chocolate in the microwave for 20-30 second intervals at 50% power.
This prevents the chocolate from burning. Remove the bowl from the microwave, stir the chocolate, and then return it to the microwave for another 20-30 seconds at 50% power.
Stirring helps distribute the heat evenly, preventing scorching.Continue microwaving and stirring in short intervals until the chocolate is mostly melted.
Then, stir until fully smooth. Stop heating before it’s fully melted, as the residual heat will finish the melting process as you stir.
Variations of this recipe
Change up the Oreos. You can use original Oreos, peppermint Oreos, vanilla Oreos or mint Oreos paired with the crushed peppermints.
Change up the toppings. You can add any topping you want or just a drizzle of a different type chocolate on top of the Oreo Balls.
Change up the chocolate. I used white chocolate for dipping and dark chocolate for the drizzle. You can use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate for the dipping. Then you can use milk chocolate, dark chocolate, or white chocolate for the drizzle and use any combination of the types of chocolate when making these Oreo truffles.
How to Decorate Christmas Oreo Balls
After coating the Oreo balls with the first layer of chocolate, you can decorate them as you like.
Decorate with Christmas Colors. Use red and green candy melts and drizzle the melted chocolate on the Oreo balls.
Decorate like a snowman. Using dark melting chocolate, draw a snowman face on the Oreo balls. Use a small orange sprinkle for the nose.
Add crushed candy canes. Add candy canes to a bag and crush them, then sprinkle the candy cane pieces on top of the Oreo Ball. If you are doing this, you will want to do it before you put them in the fridge to harden the first dip of melted chocolate so the candy cane pieces stick to them.
