Christmas breakfast is always fun in our house. For many years I made cinnamon rolls in a can and then I got bored. Now I create fun and tasty breakfasts that I know the kids are going to love and that I can have fun with. This year my plan is to have a fun Christmas themed breakfast spread.
I have been working on what things I want to include and while I have a list of fun holiday breakfasts already I wanted something new. To change things up a bit I came up with these Chocolate Glazed Baked Caked Donuts. Baked donuts are super easy to make and this recipe for cake donuts was a big hit with my whole family when I was testing them.

How to store Cake donuts
After the donuts are cooled completely and frosted, it is best to store cake donuts in an airtight container.
How long will the baked donuts last?
When stored at room temperature these cake donuts will last up to 2 days, If you are storing these baked donuts in the fridge they will last up to one week.
Can you freeze cake donuts?
Yes! You can freeze cake donuts. I suggest not frosting them before freezing them as the glaze doesn’t freeze well.
How to Freeze Baked Cake Donuts
Allow the cake donuts to cool completely. Place donuts on a baking sheet and place the baking sheet in the freezer. Once the donuts are frozen, remove them from the baking sheet and store them in a zip close bag. These baked cake donuts will keep in the freezer for up to 2 months.
How to defrost frozen cake donuts.
To thaw the frozen donuts, put them overnight in the refrigerator and warm them up a bit in the microwave when you want to serve them. Dip them in the frosting and add any toppings that you want to add after they have fully defrosted.
Do you need a donut pan to bake donuts?
If you don’t have a donut pan, make this recipe into muffins using a muffin pan. Bake for 15-18 minutes or until lightly browned. You can also make your own donut pan.
All you need is a cupcake pan and some regular aluminium foil. Simply cut the foil into a 4×4 square and bend gently around your middle finger. Remove your finger and press the shape you are left with into the muffin pan.
Variations of this recipe
Change the frosting. I used the chocolate glaze but you can also top them with a buttercream frosting or any glaze you want to.
Change up the toppings. Since my plan for these is Christmas breakfast I went with crushed peppermint candy canes but you can use chocolate sprinkles, rainbow sprinkles, m&Ms, toasted coconut,
Dip in cinnamon and sugar. If you want a cinnamon and sugar baked donut, make these donuts and, brush them with melted butter and then mix 1/4 cup of cinnamon and 2 cups of white sugar in a bowl and then dip the donuts in the mixture after they are done baking.
Roll in powdered Sugar. Make powerdered sugar baked donuts by rolling each donut in powdered sugar.
Add in fruit. YOu can add blueberries to this baked donuts recipe to make baked blueberry donuts. If doing this I would skip the chocolate glaze.
Chocolate Glazed Baked Caked Donuts Ingredients
- 2 cups all purpose flour
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1 teaspoon baking soda
- ½ teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoons cinnamon
- ½ cup vegetable oil (like canola oil, melted coconut oil or melted butter)
- ½ packed brown sugar
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 2 eggs, at room temperature
- ½ cup milk (I used whole milk)
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
Chocolate glaze Ingredients
- 1 cup powdered sugar
- 3 tablespoons cocoa powder
- 2-3 tablespoons milk of choice
- 1 teaspoon pure vanilla extract
- 2 peppermint canes, crushed
How to Make Chocolate Glazed Baked Caked Donuts
Preheat the oven to 350ºF. Spray a donut pan with non-stick spray and set aside.
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, baking soda, cinnamon and set aside.
In another bowl whisk together the oil or melted butter, brown sugar, granulated sugar, eggs, milk and vanilla extract.
Add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients and mix until well combined.
You can either spoon the batter into the donut holes or use a large piping bag or zipped-top bag which I highly recommend. Simply cut the corner off the bottom of the bag and pipe the batter into each donut hole, filling about halfway. With damp hands press them gently to smooth them out, this also prevents from burning the tops.
Bake for 10-12 minutes or until the edges and tops are lightly browned.
Cool donuts in the pan for 5 minutes then transfer to a cooling rack. Repeat with the remaining batter.
How to Make Chocolate Glaze
For the chocolate glaze, mix all the chocolate glaze ingredients together in a medium size bowl.
How to Frost Baked Donuts
Dip each donut in the chocolate glaze and place back onto the cooling rack or on a plate and sprinkle with the crushed peppermint canes or any other toppings you are putting on the baked donuts.
Let the glaze set.
