Ice Chalk
My kids love drawing with chalk outside on our driveway and they love using homemade sidewalk paint during the summer months. I wanted to send them outside to play and realiized that the kids had used up all of the normal side walk chalk. They still wanted to draw so I figured I would just make them some homemade sidewalk chalk to use so I didn’t have to run to the store.
This homemade side walk chalk is really easy to make and uses ingredients that you already have in your kitchen. A few minutes of mixing the ingredients. Then just let them freeze for about 2 hours and they are ready to use for the kids to have fun drawing outside.
What is Ice Chalk?
Ice Chalk is homemade side walk chalk that is made with cornstarch, water and food coloring. Really easy to make and only a few minutes of prep and then you let it freeze. Once frozen the kids can use it just like traditional chalk to draw on the driveway or sidewalk.
How do you use Chalk Ice?
After making the chalk Ice have the kids draw on the driveway or side walk just like they would normal side walk chalk.
How do you clean up Chalk Ice?
To clean the ice chalk off your driveway or sidewalk, just grab the garden hose and spray they artwork off. SUPER Easy! The kids also like to be the ones to clean off the driveway, because they then squirt each other with the hose.
Tips for Making Homemade Sidewalk Chalk Ice
Add a handle. You can freeze them without a handle but we find it best to have a handle, you can use Wooden Popsicle sticks, ice pop sticks, or plastic spoons.
Use just about any container. I like using the muffin tray but you can also use an ice cube tray, popsicle molds or small plastic bowls.
Allow to freeze completely. It is important to allow it to freeze all the way so the chalk is solid enough for them to draw with.
When the Ice chalk dries the colors will show up more. When you first start drawing with this homemade sidewalk chalk it will look light, but as it dries the colors will become brighter and you will see the pictures even more.
