What is a Hot Chocolate Bomb?
Hot chocolate bombs are a fun and simple way to have fun with hot chocolate. A hot chocolate bomb is a sphere of chocolate that you create in a half sphere mold with melted chocolate.
Before sealing the chocolate sphere halves you fill them with hot chocolate mix, marshmallows and peppermint.
The hot chocolate ball is then placed in a mug, and heated milk poured over it.
The heated milk causes the chocolate sphere to melt, the insides of the hot chocolate bomb to “explode” and then you mix it making a tasty hot chocolate.
What Mold is best for making Hot Chocolate Bombs?
It is easiest to make hot chocolate using silicone half sphere molds however they are extremely hard to find right now both online and in store but there are other options. You can use metal sphere molds, bath bomb molds or cake pop molds. I used these molds. If you are using bath bomb molds do not use the same ones that you use to make bath bombs, keep the 2 separate.
What Chocolate is best for Chocolate bombs?
I like using chocolate melts when making chocolate bombs because I do not have too worry about the temperature of the chocolate, I just melt it and make them.
If you are using chocolate bars or chocolate chunks, then you will want to use a chocolate that has 65% cocoa or more.
You do not want to use chocolate chips, they will not work well for making hot chocolate bombs.
Tips for making hot chocolate bombs
I have included a video on how to make hot chocolate bombs in this post as well, so you can see it visually to help you with making them.
Make sure the chocolate is melted thoroughly. You want to make sure the chocolate is smoothly melted before you use it in the chocolate molds. You can microwave per the directions on the package or melt the chocolate with a double boiler.
Allow chocolate to harden fully. While you might be impatient like myself, when you are placing the chocolate in the freezer to harden back up it is important. You need to let it fully harden or you will have issues removing it from the molds, and you will have issues with the chocolate bombs falling apart.
Use good quality chocolate. Using chocolate melts is the easiest way to go but using a higher quality chocolate will give you a better hot chocolate flavor.

How to Make Hot Chocolate Bombs
Place chocolate candy melts in a microwave safe bowl and melt in the microwave per the directions on the package. If you prefer to melt chocolate with a double boiler you can do that instead.
Place 1 tablespoon melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. Repeat with all 12 bomb mold halves.
Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slide out of the mold.
Fill 6 of the molds with 2 tablespoons hot chocolate mix, 1 soft peppermint candy, and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
Heat a plate or a flat-bottom bowl in the microwave until the surface of the plate is warm to the touch, roughly 20-30 seconds.
Press one of the empty chocolate bomb halves open-side-down onto the flat portion of the warm plate for about 10 seconds. This will gently melt the rim of the chocolate cup.
Immediately press this warmed edge chocolate cup to the top of one of the filled cups. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
Using a piping bag or a fork, drizzle the remaining chocolate candy melts over the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by sprinkling additional crushed peppermint candies over them.
Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.

I noticed in the video and the instructions it states to use 2 tablespoons of coco mix into each half of the bomb. But, in the video it only shows putting one tablespoon into each bomb. Which one did you go with?

Hi – Recently I saw some made using half of a plastic Xmas ornament (you can purchase these at the dollar store). Thought this was a great idea if you didn’t have the silicone mold ones.
Absolutely am enticed to make these thanks to your great pics! Hard to resist!👏
Thanks!
