Before you head to your favorite fast food restaurant, make sure you have a plan in place. Most often we struggle the most and we do not plan ahead. While this list does not include every fast food restaurant, it does include many popular fast food choices.
Now, this is not to say that eating fast food is a healthy option, as fast food is still fast food but we know that fast food happens. Being able to stick to your low carb or keto eating plan even when you are at a “not so healthy” place to eat is going to help you stick to it and cause you to have less stress. I am all about less stress, the less stress the better.
McDonald’s Keto and Low Carb
The first thing to remember when going to McDonald’s is, that many of their menu items are easily customized.
- Avoid anything that is breaded, has potatoes, or loaded with sweetened sauces.
- Order any hamburger or cheeseburger plain with no bun.Add bacon or cheese to any order.
- Skip the ketchup and most sauces available on the menu, these are loaded with added sugar.

- Guacamole is an excellent topping to any salad in place of dressings.
- Subway ranch or Caesar salad dressing are both good options low in carbohydrates.
- Skip the meatballs as they contain breading.
- Obviously do not order a sandwich or wrap as the breading will have too many carbohydrates.
Popeye’s Chicken Keto and Low Carb
Wow Popeye’s Chicken is famous for their Fried Chicken, there are other things on the menu that appeal to those on the ketogenic lifestyle.
- Blackened chicken tenders.
- Blackened catfish when available.
- Grilled shrimp or shrimps scampi when available.
- Green beans side dish.
- Side salad with ranch dressing if available.
While this list is not inclusive of all fast food restaurants, it is a great look at what you can do to adapt your favorite locations foods to fit your needs. Remember the goal is to avoid carbohydrates and sugar. Skip the breaded items, buns, wraps, and any sauces with added sugar. Staying in ketosis while eating out is definitely possible when you follow these rules.
