German Spaetzle Recipe
A few years ago I took a trip with my husband to Germany when he was going there for work. I instantly fell in love with everything about Germany. The best part was all the amazing food! It is not just sausages like its seen at every Oktoberfest here in America. There is so much more to enjoy and I have little by little been working on creating homemade German recipes for my family to enjoy.
My favorite side dish is a egg noodle dish called spaetzle. To me it was like a noodle and a dumpling had a baby. Spaetzle was served at so many of the local restaurants with so many variations and oh so delicious that I had to figure out how tot make it at home.
I love making homemade pasta, and making homemade spaetzel was so much easier! If you struggle with making pasta at home don’t skip this one, it is super easy compared to it!
What is German Spaetzle?
Authentic German Spaetzle is a staple in Germany. Spaetzle is a small, soft dumpling/pasta that originates in the regions of Germany. It is also known as German egg noodle dumplings.
How to Serve German Spaetzle
Serve this Authentic German Spaetzle just like you would any pasta. It is traditionally served with butter, gravy or sauce.
We love it served with butter, salt, pepper and a sprinkle of parmesan cheese.
How to Store German Spaetzle
Once cooked it will keep in the fridge in an airtight container for a few days.
It is great the next day cold or you can just heat it up in a pan with some butter to make them fresh again.
Can I make spaetzle without a spaetzle maker?
You sure can!
All you need is a metal kitchen device that has holes in it. A colander or cheese grater plane will work just as well as a spaetzle maker. All you have to do is hold or lay the device over the pot of boiling water and pour the batter through. Then use a rubber kitchen utensil to push the batter thru the holes.
German Spaetzle Ingredients
- 4 cups all-purpose flour
- 1 tbsp salt
- 8 large eggs
- 2/3 cup milk
How to Make German Spaetzle
In a large bowl, mix together the flour, salt, eggs and milk until they are well combined. You want your batter to be thin enough for it to be pushed though the holes but not to thin that it is watery. If your dough is to thick just add a tablespoon of water at a time until its the right texture.
Fill a large pot full with water and add a pinch of salt to season the water. Bring the water up to a boil on high heat.
Get a large bowl and a colander, place the colander into the bowl and set aside.
Place another colander (or spaetzle maker) over the top of the pot of boiling water. Pour some of the spaetzle dough on top of the colander or spaetzle maker and using a rubber spoon push the spaetzle dough thru the holes so the dough falls into the boiling water.
Allow the spaetzle to cook for 2-3 minutes until they float, then using a draining spoon scoop them out and place them in the colander over the bowl so they drain.
Continue making spaetzle this way until all of the batter is gone.
