King Cake is an oval-shaped cake that are made to symbolize the unity of faiths. The cake is a cross between a coffee cake and a french pastry. The cakes are decorated in the traditional Mardi Gras colors of green (representing faith), gold (representing power) and purple (representing justice). A small baby Jesus is traditionally hidden inside the cake.
What Flavor is King Cake?
Traditionally King cake is cinnamon flavored. It is a cinnamon dough cake that is then covered with a sweet frosting.
We have had many different variations, I have had some that just taste like a cinnamon roll with a lot of sugar on top. I decided that that was the best one to make a cinnamon roll king cake recipe of using canned cinnamon rolls and then topping them with colored sugar.
What do the Mardi Gras Colors mean?
The cake is decorated in royal colors of purple which signifies Justice, green for Faith, and gold for Power. These colors were chosen to resemble a jeweled crown honoring the Wise Men who visited the Christ Child on Epiphany.

The baby found in the cake represents baby Jesus. The person who finds the baby in the cake is said to have good luck and prosperity.
