Variations of this recipe
Change up the nuts. I like using slivered almonds, but you can use cashews, peanuts, walnuts, pecans or mixed nuts.
Add candy. Sometimes I like to add M&Ms or Reece’s pieces to the mix.
Change up the Cereal. If you want to you can change the Corn Chex out for Golden Gharams cereal.
Toast the nuts and coconut. You don’t have to but if you want to change things up a bit and have even more flavor, toast the nuts and coconut in the oven at 350°F for 5-10 minutes, just until the coconut is browned.
Add dried fruit. Adding dried cranberries or dried cherries are great additions.
Add sprinkles. You can add holiday sprinkles or any color sprinkles that you want to for added colors and fun.
Add Pretzels. Want more crunch, add some broken pieces of pretzel for extra crunch and salty flavors.
Holiday Theme Variations for Chex Mix
Christmas Sweet and Salty Chex Mix. Use Green and Red M&Ms and red and green sprinkles.
Halloween Sweet and Salty Chex Mix. Use candy corn and candy pumpkins for a Halloween or Thanksgiving Sweet and Salty Chex Mix.
Valentine’s Day Sweet and Salty Chex Mix. Use Pinks and Red M&Ms and red and pink sprinkles.
St. Patrick’s Day Sweet and Salty Chex Mix. Use Green M&Ms and green sprinkles.
Tips for Making this Recipe
- When boiling the mixture don’t start counting the time until it is fully boiling.
- Use salted butter, if you don’t have salted butter add 1/4 teaspoon of salt to the pot before boiling.
- Pour the chex mix on baking sheets in thin layers, if you need to use 2-3 baking sheets that is ok and will end up with a better crunchy, sticky, sweet, and salty Chex mix.
- Use a silicone or rubber spatula to mix. It will be much easier to stir the mixture if you are using a silicone or rubber spatula vs a metal kitchen spoon.
