My daughter had so much fun helping me make these easy pinwheel cookies that are perfect for the Frozen fan! These pinwheel sugar cookies are full of magic and sparkles. If you have a kiddo who loves the frozen movie then you are going to love these easy pin wheel cookies.
We took our extremely popular Whoville Pinwheels cookies and changed things up again to make these beautiful Blue and white Pinwheel cookies, that match the Frozen movie perfectly!
When making these pinwheel sugar cookies you can totally change up the color that you use. We went with blue food because we are going for a Frozen sugar cookie theme, but you can make the colors and color you want to.Of course you can change this pinwheel cookie recipe up and make them whatever colors you want to, for us the Frozen snowflake theme has been my kids favorite so far.

What are Pinwheel cookies?
Pinwheel cookies are a slice and bake sugar cookies that are rolled with multiple layers of colored cookie dough to form a swirled sugar cookie. These easy pinwheel cookies can be colored to any color that you want them to be to match any party or holiday you are celebrating. These beautiful cookies are one of our favorites to make every year.
Tips for making Easy Pinwheel Cookies
Keep the dough from getting to soft. The dough will be sticky, you need to make sure you are really keeping the dough cold to make the butter firm.
Use parchment paper too prevent sticking. When you roll out the dough you want to make sure you are rolling it in between the parchment paper or wax paper or it will stick to your rolling pin.
Sticky dough. After you roll it out the dough you need to place the dough in the fridge for at least an hour. If for some reason the dough is to squishy feeling you can add a 1/2 cup of flour to the dough.
Sprinkles after baking. Put the snowflake sprinkle on AFTER they are done baking, if you put them on the cookies before baking they will melt.
Room temperature butter. It is important to use room temperature butter when you are making these cookies.
Use a sharp knife. When you are cutting the edges of the cookie it is best done with a sharp knife.
How to add flavors to Pinwheel Cookies
If you want to change the flavor of the pinwheel cookies you can easily by changing out the vanilla extract for a different flavor clear extract. Peppermint and coconut extracts are others that we love to use. You can also make them lemon flavored by adding lemon extract and some lemon zest.
How to Store Rainbow Pinwheele Cookies
Baked pinwheel cookies need to be stored in an airtight container. These cookies will keep for one week on the counter in an airtight container.
Can I Freeze Pinwheel Cookies?
If you are wanting to make the cookies ahead of time and freeze them you can. They will keep in the freezer for up to 3 months.
Frozen Pinwheel Cookies Ingredients
- 3 cups flour
- 1 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 1/2 tsp. salt
- 1 cups granulated sugar
- 1 cups butter (2 sticks)
- 2 egg
- 1 tsp. vanilla extract
- blue food coloring
- 1 cup white and blue sprinkles
- Wilton snowflake sprinkles
How to Make Pinwheel Cookies
In a stand mixer bowl with paddle attachment or in a mixing bowl with an electric hand mixer, Cream sugar and butter until fluffy, about 5 minutes.
When sugar and butter are mixed well and fluffy, add egg and vanilla.
Next, mix the dry ingredients together in a separate bowl.
Once dry ingredients are mixed add them to the wet ingredients and mix well.
Separate the dough in half and color one part blue with blue food coloring.
Put the freshly made non dyed dough between two sheets of parchment paper and roll 11 x 9 inches and 1/4 inch thick. Once the first section of sugar cookie dough is rolled out, Repeat with the blue colored sugar cookie dough.
Put the rolled dough including the parchment paper, on a cookie sheet and refrigerate for 10 minutes or longer.
Once the dough is chilled, remove it from the fridge and Take the top layer of parchment paper off both doughs and lightly wet the tops with water.
Sandwich the two colors together with the parchment paper on the outside of the dough so that the dough is touching each other. Using a paring knife trim the edges of the dough to make straight edges and make each piece of dough the same exact size.
Remove the top layer of parchment paper, leaving the parchment paper that is on the bottom color still there and start rolling up and use the bottom layer of paper to pull it tight. If the dough tear, you can just pinch it together.
Pour the sprinkles onto a large platter and roll the log onto the sprinkles and press them in.
Place the dough into the fridge for 15 minutes or longer.
Once the dough is chilled, remove from the fridge and slice the dough into 1/4 inch slices and place on the parchment lined baking sheets.
Bake at 325° F for 10 -15 minutes. As soon as the cookies come out of the oven place a snowflake in the middle of the cookie.

its 1 egg 🙂 I think its habit for me to type eggs and not egg lol cause i seem to have the same problem for all recipes that have 1 egg and then i put the s on the end of it when typing it up lol

These cookies are so cute. I’ve never tried ‘rolling’ dough before. Do you actually roll the parchment paper into the dough as you roll? When you say to sandwich the 2 dough, is this side by side or one on top of the other?
