With just 3 simple ingredients the whole family will love my Grandma’s Old-Fashioned Chocolate Frosting! A simple chocolate frosting recipe that is perfect for any cake! This chocolate icing recipe will bring you back to remembering the cakes your grandma used to make for you and the whole family will love this easy icing recipe.
Old-Fashioned Chocolate Frosting
My grandmother has been making the same chocolate frosting ever since I was a little kid. It has always been my favorite! This frosting recipe brings back so many great memories for me and this simple chocolate frosting has always been a family favorite. In our house we call this Memere’s chocolate frosting, because that is what we call my grandma but I promise you it is the easiest chocolate frosting ever to make.
It is a small joke with my Memere and me about how much I love desserts. I went to school to be a pastry chef and no matter how many fancy desserts I have learned to make or how many desserts I have created on my own my 2 favorites are always her angel food cake with this frosting and her chocolate fudge.
While I love getting fancy when it comes to baking there is nothing better than a simple recipe that has been handed down and is well-loved like this chocolate frosting recipe. Because this frosting is one that you spread instead of pipe when using it is best used with a cake. You can use it with cupcakes, but you will want to spread the frosting on top and not pipe it. I like to use this frosting with my Boxed cake mix hack cake, Homemade Chocolate cake, and Angel Food Cake Cupcakes.
How to Store Chocolate Frosting
Store this homemade chocolate icing in an air-tight container in the fridge. If you need to soften it up a bit add it to your stand mixer bowl and whip on medium speed for 2-3 minutes.
How to use Old-Fashioned Chocolate Frosting
This homemade frosting is a simple frosting that is perfect for frosting a cake. It is not one that does well with cupcakes because it doesn’t pipe like buttercream. If you are wanting a pipeable frosting I suggest using my Chocolate Buttercream Frosting.
Tips and Variations of this Recipe
You can use real butter, you just need to let it sit out and get to room temperature and give it a bit more time in the mixer than you do when you use butter spread.
You can use any brand of butter spread, I use country crock because that is what my grandma used.
Use any cocoa powder. The great thing about this 3 ingredient frosting is that any cocoa powder will work with it.

This IS the best homemade frosting I have ever made..I’ve made the recipe on the Hershey’s cocoa box, and it is too sweet. This isn’t sickening sweet..it’s creamy and just the right balance of sweet and chocolate..This will be my go to frosting from now on.

I will assume powder sugar is the same as confection? Do you use salted butter?
Krista
Stephanie says
Yes they are the same and I use salted for this frosting.
Lori says
can you use regular butter? I am not a fan of country crock butter spread?
Stephanie says
Yes you may just make sure it’s soften.
Cindy says
Is this stiff enough to use in a pastry bags for designs?
Stephanie says
you can add more powder sugar for that but it’s not the best piping frosting you would want a buttercream for piping.
