How to pick the Best Corn on the Cob
When you are buying corn on the cob at the grocery store there are a few things to look for to make sure you are getting the best fresh corn on the cob. The fresher the corn on the is the better it will taste.
Check the husk. You want the corn husk to be green and tight against the corn.
Corn tassels (the top stingy thing on the corn). You want them to be brown and slightly sticky. If they are dried up and black then the corn is old.
Feel the Kernels. Thru the husk you can feel the kernels of the corn. You want them to be plump and the cob to be full of them. If you can feel empty spaces in between other kernels then you do not want to use that one.
Avoid corn with teeny holes at the top. When you are looking at corn in the store if you see tiny holes at the top those are worm holes, you do not want to use corn that has worms.
Peel back the top husk. You can also peek back a small section of the top of the husk to see what the corn looks like. Do not peel it all the way, but just enough that you can see if the corn kernels are plump and there. It is an automatic giveaway that you don’t want to use the piece of corn if the top section is missing the kernels, they are mushy or discolored.
